AFM (Air flow sensor) question?

I am trying to get my car running for a long period of time, not just a minuet, tops. I tested it by means of Clarks Garage. I tested terminal 6 (ground) to terminal 9 (input voltage from DME) and got 9.7 DCVs, 10.5DCVs with unit unconnected. That test was good according to Clarks. I also tested terminal 7 (output voltage to DME) to terminal6 (ground) and got .2 (might have been .02, cant remember, but think it was .2) That also checks good with Clarks, says it should read 150 - 250mV, dont know what that is though. Pushed the door open w/ screwdriver, meter slowly rose to 8.2. I then tested terminal 22 (air temp. sesor) and terminal 6 (ground) on the male ends of the sensor and I got "OL" on my meter. Clarks says it should have read 1.45 - 3.3 k-ohms. Temp outside that day was about 80 or so.
If the temp sensor isnt reading anything, my car should still run, correct?, but not for a very long time. It idles at 950 give or take 50 RPMs, sputters most of the time like it wants to cut out, and eventually does. I smell gas while inside of the car, tank half full, and I dont smell it when car isnt/ hasnt been started. Water coming from tailpipe which smells like gas, and there was some white smoke before, but none today. Thanks guys.
P.S.- I have replaced ref./ speed sensors, and FPR and damper, new battery an alternater a few moths back. Dont really want to put more money into the car, and still not have it working. No oil in coolent, oil looks clean too. Thanks guys.

OL can mean one of two things, open loop which means the circuit is open (no connection). Some other meters it essentially means over load or more technically speaking 'out of range'. This means you need to choose a higher resistance range on the multimeter if applicable.

Im not sure if a faulty temp sensor in the AFM will cause problems with the car cutting out. It does measure temperature so the DME can calculate air density / air mass so you get proper fuel metering. Based on your description it sounds like the car is flooding. What do the plugs look like?

I would try and find a known good AFM you can swap onto the car. They are pretty cheap on ebay, usually not more than $20.

It was getting dark out, so I couldnt check the plugs, although I wanted to, to see if they are "steamed cleaned". I will take them out tommorow, and I will try and talk to a few locals if I can borrow their AFM. The AFMs from 83-88 are all the same, no? Id assume that the 89 with the 2.7L engine AFM wont work, but will Turbos work in my '83, dont think so, but just wondering.

Well, make sure to use the correct terminology:

AFM = Air Flow Meter (has a flapper door), such as your car.

MAF = Mass Air Flow Sensor (used on newer cars), has no flapper.
