Wheel/tire upgrade - my 944 is fun again! Yay!

It's been a while since I've been able to put any sort of real TLC into my 944 - for a long time she's just been parked and only driven intermittently to the store or whatever like that. I had a set of decent-looking Cup-2s on the car, but the tires were shot (about 6-year-old Bridgestone Potenzas with bad flat-spotting on a couple of them). Well I finally got around to putting 15" fuchs on the car with Kuhmo Ecstas. Man, what a difference! Instead of those heavy-arse wheels with the bad tires, these are light, they spin up quickly and there's no "whump-whump-whump" at speed from the flat spots.

Just a reminder to you guys - don't overlook the obvious! If you're wondering about power loss, check your tire pressure. If you're wondering about degrading handling, check your tires. If you're wondering about noises from the back end (or front end) that vary with speed, check the tires. If you have vibrations through the wheel, check your tires. If you've got pull to one side, check your tire pressures and make sure they match side-to-side. Tires matter!

Hoping to get a few more little TLC items done on the car tomorrow, but man - it's nice having it back and running well finally. I'd put this off WAY too long!

I would highly recommend fuchs for any 944.

I also upgraded tires at the start of this year. I have 15" cookie cutters and I put on 205/50/15 Falken rt-615 tires! This was a double upgrade. First, the lower profile tire give a better torque curve, so it starts to pull quicker. Second, these tires are just amazing! They are made to be 200 treadwear, so they can be run as stock tires in SCCA/PCA/etc, but they are almost R compound tires. I have driven track in the wet and dry with them. The tires have handled very well in both conditions. Did I also mention they were $85 each!

So like Jeff said, tires matter. In fact I would say they are the biggest performance upgrade you can buy! A car with 400HP on rock hard tires will just spin them...

pics coming... The car looks like hell right now (an idiot hit-and-ran the driver's front fender and a few other cosmetic issues yet to address) but I'll put some up anyway later... The fuchs give a nice, raw, "mean" look kinda' like the old Krager rims from the 80s... I like it!
