968 engine in a 944S2?

Guys, I have been trying to get my 968 engine to fire up for a long time; try July 2008. I tore the top of my '89 44S2 Head off when the chain broke, For those of you who don't know multi cam '44s and '68s have a chain under the rocker cover at the back of the head that drives the second cam. It does not come up in the log books or service scehdules although I noticed after the event (Easter 08) that the replacement chain is a mere 80 bucks. So all those years I dutifully changed the belt without knowing that lurking unseen was a head killer.

Anyway I got the bright idea to upgrade my S2 to a '68 variocam engine and purchased a '68 engine with wiring harness and CPU from one of your own. I did ask if the swap was straightforward and was told it was. The '68 engine landed last July; so it has been almost one year and I can't get any spark or fuel. all the usual suspects have been checked; DME etc. Everything checks out fine.

The guy who sold me the engine who is ever so helpful thinks that the '68 CPU will only run with the '68 alarm module 928 618 260 01 which he sent me.

The trouble is that the Alarm module on the '44S2 is wired into the chassis harness and the plug is not interchangeable with the socket for 928 618 260 01.

The other thing we did; so as not to change the torque tube/gearbox we put the '44S2 bellhousing/flywheel/clutch onto the back of the '68 engine and wired the '44S2 flywheel snesor into the '68 wiring harness.

Has anyone else put a 1993 968 variocam into an 89 S2 and if so did you have this problem?

What is the solution?

I KNOW that someone has done this - I've seen it on here at some point - but I don't remember who or when. Did you also post this on Rennlist?

Many people have done this, but the wiring is probably getting you at the moment. Hopefully you have the wiring diagrams for both cars.
Just a few random thoughts...

Did you compare the flywheels and sensor locations? The S2 uses a different ignition system than the 968, so be sure you have that part sorted out. Did you install the dampener from the S2 on the new engine since you removed the dampened flywheel?

Hey 44S268...

We saw your post on Rennlist. I still think you fried your DME. If you connected everything up and tried to start the car, you sent full voltage up the wrong wire. Read the info sheet on the electrical very carefully. (the one posted on Rennlist). There are a couple of pins on the forward harness to swap as well as the harness on the firewall in the cabin.

We are in the final stages on making the engine fire. We are all hooked up but have been custom fabbing a 3" exhaust.

Take your time and review the electrical carefully. If you are not comfortable in doing this, get someone who is.

yup...the DME unit pin 27 (black wire) needs "key on" 12v power, that is the key switch term 15 (black wire)

...the original 968 gets the 12 volts to pin 27 through the 968's alarm circuit.
