Setting timing on my 944S
 

Ok we've got the head replace and almost everything back together. Is there a good write up on setting the timing on the 16V engines? I don't want to mess this up and have to start all over again. Thanks in advance.

The best description is in the factory service manual.

Keep in mind that that is only to set the initial timing. You will have to iteratively tweak the relationship between the exhaust camshaft and the crankshaft to make the car "come alive".

Where can I find that on line???

George, I recognize that you don't suffer fools gladly, but I think this is a pretty good question (and I want to know, too). Can anyone elaborate on the process of fine tuning 16v timing? How much art/skill is there to it? How about warning signs that you're going the wrong way, etc?

You set the initial timing according to the book. Put all back together. Take a test drive. Take it apart. Advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's better, advance the timing a couple of degrees. Take a test drive. Is it better or worse? If it's worse, retard the timing a couple of degrees. Lock it down.

You're done.

(It only took me ten hours the first time.)

Ha, okay, fair enough! I guess I'm just a little gun shy of experimentation when it comes to timing.
