Struts and Shocks

Anyone tell me whats the difference between the shocks and struts from the very first 944 to the latest s2 .Not includeing the mo30 upgrade

Are the turbos the same as the s2 ?

Do earlier cars have a front strut that u change the insert without any cutting/modifying the strut? looking on websites they say "bolted struts only" does this mean bolted to car or the insert is bolted into the strut?

Are all the rear shocks the same?

Whats available for an 89 S2 in the way of complete front struts .I take it Koni just do the modified insert .Been looking on the Bilstein website do they do complete struts .its hard to tell website not very good

Thanks Mark

I can't give you the entire history, but here is some info...

86 and earlier cars had an 18mm wide flange on the steering knuckle with a bolt spacing of 58mm. These struts all had changeable cartridges.

From 87 on the steering knuckles had 20mm wide flanges with 63mm bolt spacing. In 87 they also introudced a new upper strut mount and switched to sealed Boge/Sachs struts on all cars with the standard suspension. The factory upgraded suspension options used Koni's with replaceable cartridges.

(my numbers above might be slightly off... just going from memory.)

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/susp-15.htm

Halfway down the page is all the info about sway bars, springs, etc for all models. In general, S2 suspension was same as base turbo suspension of the same year, if I remember correctly..

not sure how accurate that sheet is - there is at least one error there - for example, the 968 had 25.5mm torsion bars in all models and years, not the 24mm specified there
