I have done a few unfortunatley. Its a pain. I would buy a windshield removal kit. Basically a few slim sharp tools and a piece of piano wire. The tools can puncture the gasket of the windshield and allow you to feed the piano wire through. Then you insert the piano wire into the handles and just work it around the window frame.

Even with a good kit your chances of cracking the WS are high. Then once removed, if not cracked, improper packing and handling will cause a crack.
A shop may be the way to go with the buyer in the next bay having it installed. GL John_AZ |

I agree with John AZ. Save up and have Safe Light do it. They've got the glass and the experience to do a class job. It will save you a ton of hassle.

Agree with John_AZ and The Glademister. I was going to be smart and pull the windshield out of my convertible RX-7. I cleaned everything down so there was no rubber molding or sealant. Then took a small piano wire, carefully inserted it at the bottom, went up one side, across the top, the started around the next curve going toward the bottom. The wire hung, so I started to pull it back and the window cracked, very small cracks. I was using no real force or hard pressure, but evidently it was enough to create the crack.
When I went to a local body shop after my daughter hit a deer with the Pathfinder, I talked to the owner about what had happened. He told me that he never allows anybody in his shop to take out windshields, he always hires it out because he had experienced so many cracks when repairing his customers vehicles. This is a man that guarantees his repairs and the work involved. I trust him because I have seen the excellence of his work. This is one of the few jobs that I would hire out to somebody with more experience, plus the guarantee if they break or crack the windshield, they are responsible for replacement. .
