944 running rough

My 944 runs really rough if the gas cap is on tight. By simply looseding the gas cap, it runs perfectly! Any ideas out ther?
Thanks,
Lori

Several things come to mind, but these are only logical guesses. Something restricting fuel flow such as a clogged filter or strainer screen at the tank outlet. By loosening the cap, you allow fuel to flow easier by releasing some back pressure, similar to picking up fluid with a drinking straw by putting your finger over the end of it, then removing your finger allows the fluid to flow out. Secondly, fuel pump getting weaker, and same principle described above applies. I'd check the fuel pressure and output. Also the in-tank strainer screen that is threaded into the outlet of the tank. Change fuel filter if it's been awhile since last changed. Clarks-Garage or Haynes manual has procedure for checking pressure/output.
