CV Joint

I know I have bad rear wheel bearings. I cannot get the axle nut off so I just scheduled a garage to do it for me Friday. They have been making noise and now I am hearing more a rubbing noise with the window down when I drive by objects as the noise reflects off of them.

I am 95% sure all the noise is from the wheel bearings. When the CV Joints are dry or bad do they make a very distinctive "clicking" noise or could it be a rubbing noise as well? There is an interruption between the rubbing noise (rub, rub, rub...), It does get faster and louder the faster the car goes. Racing the engine has no impact on the noise. Braking has no impact on the noise other then it slows down and gets quieter as the speed of the car slows down. The gear and RPM also have no impact on the noise. The noise is all directly to the speed of the wheel.

Thanks for any input guys! The driver side is the worse of the two by a lot. The budget and garage time only allows for one side this week. I will have them repack the CV Joints while there are in there.

The "clicking" noise is common on the CV shafts. Repacking usually will help some.
One solution is to mark the shafts in the current position and mark the L & R of each shaft.
Repack the shafts and then-carefully swap the shafts R to the L. Important, keep outside joint to opposite outside joint. This will put the stress on new surfaces and stop the click.

Your other solution is to buy rebuilt drive shafts at Checker/OReilly like these:

Have the shop do the axle bearing and you do the shafts to save a few $.

Edit--the shafts cannot be swapped on an auto--2 different sizes

Right now I am getting a rubbing noise, not a very distinctive click yet. I have heard bad CV Joints click before. It was a very distinctive click.

My questions is...
Does a dry or bad CV start as a rubbing noise or is it a click right away?

I do have a manual. There was a post on here before with the VW numbers for the shafts and CV Joints that was a very reasonable price. I think the whole unit was cheaper than one Porsche CV Joint. Any know the part number? I have an 87 944 na manual.

This link has some interchanges. Go to post 23 and compare both links--some later posts had doubts unanswered.
