944 timing cover problem
I am a newbie to Porsche's and I am changing the water pump, belts, ect on my sons 83 944, and have the updated water pump with the guide. What do I do for the back timing belt cover? Do I have to drill two holes for the guide mounts on the water pump to fit through, or do I need a different rear cover? Also I need a 46mm idler pulley thats larger than my original?

The rear cover can be cut out with a dremel or buzz saw. It's very easy to do. There is a factory bulletin of the outline that needs to be cutout that I had but not sure if I can pull it up because i'm posting from my phone..

Thanks Techno, that's great news. Would anybody have that bulletin so I can see how much to cut out?

While you have your cutter out, split the inner cover where it goes over the crank sprocket. You'll end up with a 2-piece inner cover that makes water-pump changes in the future much easier. You won't have to get the crank sprockets off to take the inner cover off to get to the water pump.

Sorry, no pics. Maybe next time I've got my car apart I'll snap some. The outer and inner covers' edges are keyed (flanged and tongued, if that makes sense) and so it's actually the bolts that hold the outer cover to the inner that hold the piece of inner cover on. I seem to recall cutting so as to leave two bolts for that purpose. Or was it one? Sorry, it's been awhile since I've been in there. At any rate, I've been running this way for years and had no problems.

This is a little off topic but does the rear cover bolt to the engine? I noticed that my rear cover jiggles around a lot and alows the front part of the cover and other places to touch the rollers. This hardly seems safe. I figure I will find out when I do the belts soon but it would be nice to get the bolts now so I can just put them in when doing the change. Anyone know?
