Thumbs up schnell short shifter

I just want to highly recommend the schnell short shifter kit, I installed mine today while I was doing a alignment and WOW does it make it feel real nice, Good solid feel, its very nice for anyone who wants a more firm feel to the shifter. So far so good

I bought an eBay clone of the Schnell made by Hamburg-Technic in Germany and have been following reports of weld failures at the shaft/bracket interface. I wish I had bought the Schnell as now I have to reweld that connection. I haven't even installed it yet but when it fails you are F'ed and have to get a tow. As a comparison how tight was the spherical bearing on yours? The Hamburg unit was much looser than the spherical bearings I am familiar with for drop links.

Yea I heard about the e-bay knock offs being bad, Thats why I went with the real thing. The spherical bearing was good, It was tight but not so tight that you couldnt move it by hand, I think drop links are alot tighter. The REAL schnell unit is very nicely made

What site did you buy it on, and how much?

several sites sell a short shifter, I just wonder if they're all the same, or if they make thier own. I'd like to find a good one, and the schnell gets good reviews.

I got my Schnell from Eagle Day Racing. The first one came w/ the pin hole drilled in the worng position not allowing the car to go into 1st or 2nd. Eagle Day was great, sent a replacement right out. I also bought one from Tim @ Speedforce that shortens the actual shifter. You have to use a different knob (I bought a MoMO)' With both of them it is unbelievable, basicly your arm never moves on the console lid, it is just a few inch throw and very tight.

One other quick note about using the 2 short shift mods, my wife can't stand it. Along w/ the stiffer suspension she hates the feel of the car now, PERFECT!!

How about the throw on the Schnell, Is there really a huge reduction in the throw distance?

I'm not sure if I want mine to have a drastic change in throw but more of a firmer feel as an upgrade for a worn stock mechanism.

Does anyone know how these compare to the Autothority Short Shifter? Pretty much the same price but same build quality and feel?

I do not have the Schnell shifter, but the linkage from 944Racing which was around back in early 2000.. they have since gone under. Its basically the same design. The reduction in throw is pretty significant but nothing over the top. Honestly if i had to compare it, the short shifter makes the throws equal to that of a car you would find now days. The increased notchiness you will either like or not like. I personally like it because its a very affirmative 'yes its in gear' feeling now.

I have no experience with the Autothority, i was going to buy one a few years ago but they were on 'indefinite backorder' according to them. They were one of the only adjustable ones next to the Weltmeister (which i believe is also NLA). From what ive read, the adjustable linkage on its shortest setting is equal to the Schnell / 944Racing linkages.

I had a weltmeister short shifter for about 10 years. It was great!! Bought that cheap one off E-Bay for my new cars thinking I got a deal. I need to install and see how it works. I guess you get what you pay for. I will let you know the results.

Im running one in my 924s, it was very easy to install, firms things up and has a great "your in gear" feel, I agree with techno. Buy the schnell youll like it.

I love the Schnell shifter on my cars as well, but make sure you guys get in the habit of checking the hardware is tight, I've heard of one coming loose and stranding a car.

I've heard this too and someone recommended to safety wire the pinch bolt and use red loctite on all of the other bolts.

i have the 944racing kit on my 968 - similar design to the 944 kit - yes, the set screw needed to be safety wired - loctite didn't do it - it kept coming loose, leaving me with a very sloppy shifter that almost wouldn't let it go into gear - fine now though

also, the spherical bearing transmits a fair amount of vibration that the rubber bushing used to absorb - not bad for me, but a bit buzzy to some - no noise, but you can feel it with your hand on it

i still like the kit, and am not removing it, but thought i would pass on those impressions

I have a Weltmeister unit and have got stranded one night at a bad time (could not shift into 1st at a critical moment in traffic). Have put Red Loctite on the pinch bolt, but do not know how to fit a safety wire with the unit already installed. How can I do this... any suggestions?
