Re 944S with engine clacking

I thought the problem was the con rod bearings, so I changed them, but no improvement, The hot oil pressure at 2000 rpm is just youching 4 bar. please listen to the whole video as you will se there is a period of about 2 minutes that there is no sound. i dont see a post for a videp but i would check the chain tension between the cams...the tensioners can go bad or get worn

id check the chain as i said....also id check for a cracked exhaust manifold doesnt sould like one but worth a check

I am more inclined to think a collapsed lifter based on the video.

How do I go about determining if I have a collapsed lifter? Can I see it by removing the valve cover?

That does not sound like a collapsed hydraulic lash adjuster. It sounds more like a belt slapping on itself or to something. Did you put the belt guard on the water pump?
Did you tighten the ignition rotor on the camshaft pulley? Is the distributor housing centered to the rear cover?

Remove the valve cover. Push on the hydraulic lifter that is not in contact with the cam lobe with a wooden dowel and see if it will compress.

The belt guard is on the water pump, the distributor rotor is in tight, and the cover is centered. I don't see any sign of trouble no grinding or markings. I removed the belt cover and exposed th belts I removed the balance shaft belt and am running the engine with only the timing belt. no change. It dose sound like something slapping against something but more metallic. The lifters seem fine but will check again tonight. Can a noise like this come from a defective water pump? It's a major job to take it off, and if I do and it is not the problem, I will have to put it back to hear the sound again to get further advice.

the timing belt on mine gets loose when cold. It slaps against the timing cover up by the distributor cap and the PS reservoir. Put your hand on the timing cover and you can feel it on the outside. Goes away after ~2 minutes running. Is that what yours is doing?

I've checked the lifters, all OK. Is it possible to be the piston wrist pin? the sound seems to be coming from bellow the cylinder head. The only other possibility is the water pump, its a rebuilt unit I installed, I only drove 1000 miles since installation.

You dont have the ballance shaft belt on.
It looks like you dont have the ballance shaft belt on.
That means the ballance shaft tabs might be hitting the pistons. I would install the ballance shaft belt, correctly timed, and see if the noise goes away. |

I am sorry you didnt understand my suggestion, or perhaps you simply dont agree. It seems to me that since you can slearly see the balance shaft belt is not installed and the balance shafts are not turning, that means that there could be 4 balance shaft lobes, 2 on each shaft, interfering with the engine. It also seems reasonable that installing the balance shaft belt will at the very least reduce vibration in the engine and assure that the lobes are where they should be, instead of wondering if they could be hitting something. If still sounds like nonsense to you, I would genuinely be intrerested in hearing from you as to why. feel free to direct your 944 Engine timing lesson to underappreciated1@yahoo.com instead of boring the rest of the group with something so fundamental and simple. thanks |

I removed the balance shaft belt to eliminate it as a source of the problem. The noise was present prior to the removal of the belt.
