Play in stick shift/gaugues not working
Hey guysm just because i've never actually driven a 944 before, i wanted to ask this:
the gears in the car are easy to find, the neutral position seems fine, but when i stick the shifter in gear, there is still alot of play with the stick. I'm just wondering how it should feel... also, when i turn the key to the accessory position, none of the gauges activate - fuel, battery or any of the dash lights. about the only things that work on the dash are the green parking lights light and a red light on the battery gauge - the battery is brand new. could this be form a single fuse or relay, or multiple fuses or relays?

Yes, the shifter actually wears out. If you pop off the shift boot, then wiggle it in gear, you'll see exactly where it is worn. There are a number of fixes. Or, just buy a new one for $50.

Check the information on post 5 for solutions to sloppy shifter.
why is my shifter now so stiff and sticky? Key to ACCESSORY----That is normal for the guages to stay dark, your radio will work. Did you know the accessory position is used to remove the sunroof? GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |

Shifter: awesome. now i have a reason to get a short throw!
gauges: weird because i just watched a video where a guy was doing a walk through on his car and he turned the key to the acc. position and all the gauges and indicator lights fired up, which made me think something was wrong...

A short throw shifter is typically the linkage in the back of the car, one company does make a billit shift lever though - I forget who.
Yeah the normal is just the radio will come on and those lights you mentioned. Unless he had his light switch on the "on" position, then when key turns to accesory the guages will light up. |

I'm sorry, it's not that the gauges don't light up - its that they don't indicate anything. the fuel gauge stays at the bottom and the battery reads as if there was a low charge, which is why i assume the red light is on. and when i say "light up" i mean that the indicator lights (the ones that tell the car's status) don't light up then turn off like a car normally does...
i guess i'm being unclear, i'm sorry.
