It's not cheap, since you have to disassemble the final drive and re-shim the gears for clearance, plus all the WYIT stuff like bearings and maybe syncros. and maybe replacing the LSD clutch plates.

Is it do-able by a novice wrench? Would I need any special tools? AND would a 951 trans fit in an 85.1? Still using stock 8" Fuchs?

"450" and "i don't know" seems to fit - no chance of getting it done for that
first, never install a used clutch type unit without replacing the friction material - even a used lsd is going to be a few hundred - then you add in the new parts second, since the trans comes out to do this right, how do you get it out, apart, set up, and back together in less than 12 hours? that's a good grand right there this is not a job for an amateur either - setting up a diff correctly takes precision tools and experience - thrust and pre-load are critical - do it wrong, and you get to start all over again and replace a lot more stuff that got messed up i do most of my own wrenching, have done almost everything at one time or another, and don't fear ripping down an engine - i even had a shop years ago, but diffs are something i leave to professionals - i've seen the ugly results of just slapping it together the R&R isn't a big deal though |

Honda is correct. It can be done but mods are required for the trans. Not sure on the cost but you would need a lsd unit.
Other options: Check with Ian at 944online of George at 944ecology for a complete trans w/lsd unit. Flash is correct about $2K for a new rebuilt. A 951 tranny has different ratios than a 944 n/a tranny. It is not the way to go.

I think a Quaife can be had for around $1,500. Beyond that, throw in a few hundred bucks for the incidentals (as is mentioned above) and you're right around $2k. If you plan on having someone else do it for you, double the cost.
