Clutch pedal at half-way up

1989 944S2

Suddenly my clutch pedal does not come all the way up.

The clutch still works - but there is only 1/2 of the normal "movement."

I can pull it all the way up with my foot.

When I press down - the pedal springs down half way - and then starts to work the clutch.

What can be wrong? I had a clutch job about 3,000 miles ago.

Dick

Your master and slave cylinders are failing. Fortunately, this is a fairly easy job that can be done with basic tools and 2-3 hours of time.

See here for a good how-to:
Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement
Clutch Slave Cylinder Replacement

Push the pedal all they way down quickly while shifting and see if that temporarily relieves the problem. If so, it's most likely the seals on the master or slave going bad. If not, you may have the same problem I'm struggling to figure out where the pedal gets soft under hard braking and sticks half way back up. I replace the system on mine but it didn't get rid of the problem.

Id bet mnoney its your firewall. Mine gave way in exactly the same manner as yours, whats happening is the thin firewall has cracked or broken and is now flexing outwards, its a pain to fix, ive seen people make braces from the strut tower to the firewall to hold it in place, but i just made up a plate of alum that i bolted over the damaged section of the wall and then mounted the master to.

check your clutch inspection hole, if you have fluid coming out of there it is a pre sign of master/slave cylinder failure, my clutch pedal did not return to its full position before my cylinder died.

Wouldn't trapped air also cause this symptom? Has the system been bled?
