Filter and reuse like new engine oil?

I need to drain the oil to fit a new oil-pan gasket but the oil is only about a month old and has only done 125 miles or so. It is still almost crystal clear so I am planning to reuse it, but should I filter it through some kind of filter before I put it back in?

Also, I red that I need to put some zink additives in the oil.
What brands do you reckommend?

...i've never heard of anyone reusing oil....but sure i guess if u want to.

if i were to do it, i'd probably use a 2liter soda bottle minus the bottom and coffee filter.

what oil are u using? cause i've never seen an off the shelf bottle of zddp additive. it's always in the pre-added in the oil

As long as you keep the oil clean, meaning drain it into a clean container, and keep dust & debris from falling into the container while you work, you will be fine to just pour it back in.

I don't use oil additives, as I'm not a chemical engineer to know how the additive package that the base oil has will work with somebody else's miracle additive.

I use Brad-Penn racing oil in the 911 as the air-cooled cars need more ZDDP than our more modern 944 engines. The 944 currently has Mobil 1, but I may switch to Brad-Penn just to stock less oil here at home.

Thanks guys. I read something about a requirement for ZDDP additives for older engines over at Lindsey Racing. To protect the tappets from premature wear. I'm using porsche approved Fuchs oil myself called Titan Supersyn as that seemed to offer the best compromise between performance and local availabilty.

Let me ask you...

How much do you love your car.

If the chance of contaminated oil or bits of grit getting back into your engine is a worry then dont.

replace filer and oil,,,, its not as if its a thousand bucks?

and NO additives, your engine and OIL doesnt need it

You can use a paper paint filter. It looks just like a paper funnel used by convienence stores except the paint filter has a cheesecloth like material to allow flow. You can get these at a local automotive paint supplier. Coffee filters do not allow proper flow and it will take forever to refill as they are designed for the coffee to "drip" not flow.

seriously, are you that strapped for $25 bucks? The effort alone that is required to recycle it is worth spending that much...

I appreciate your concern but the oil has litterally only done 2-3 short drives. The oil pan started leaking as soon as I put in the synthetic oil. The cost was actually closer to $140 dollars.

But not to worry! I discovered that my turbo has been chewed up by a rogue metal spacer. I will change the oil and flush the engine to clean out any grains of aluminium that may have made their way through the AOS.

Can anyone confirm the change of tappets on the 1990 engine?

Yup.... Changed it to synthetic and it just shot right past the seals.... Not a great idea in a 20yr old motor...
