What to do now??

Well guys,

thank you so much for the help. I would have never been able to do the clutch job on my 944 without your guys' help. Now, I got my car back and frankly, i'm bored lol.

What needs to be done to keep this thing in good running order?

I just did the clutch, master and slave cylinders, bled the fluid, flushed the tranny with better fluid.

The timing belt and water pump were replaced less than 10k miles ago.

I will probably go ahead and change the air filter, oil, and spark plugs. The spark plug WIRES look great. I haven't pulled a plug to look at it yet.

I just want to do whatever maintenance I can do to getthis running in tip top shape. So any suggestions are welcomed.

There's a few little quirky things that bother that I need to do.

1. Rear hatch still won't unlatch
2. I need to replace my shift lever, but for some reason I can't figure out how to get the knob off.
3. Now that I removed the leather boot, I can't get it to stay down (as soon as I shift, it comes off and it's annoying.
4. Headlights sometimes don't flip up if the car has been running...but if I flip the switch ad I'm cranking the car they will pop up every time.
5. Dash is cracked. (did they make a vinyl cover because it looks like the part that's cracked on mine is just a cover that can be popped right off)
6. Wheels need refinishing
7. Needs a new paintjob (peeling etc) HOWEVER I did get out there with some meguiars scratch-x, ultimate compound, and tech wax 2.0 and was able to get it shining nicely..

So there are plenty of things I can do to it to make it LOOK nicer, but I'd hate to do all that and then have it running like crap.

So once again and as always thanks for any suggestions!

jacketfan! How old is your car? If 20+ I would recommend changing your fuel pump as well as the metal filter out of the fuel tank. Look for a thread by John_Az showing a good picture of it.
You can also have look at my thread "Death of a fuel pump" and see the filter inside of fuel pump which you can not reach. When fuel pump get this level of dirt (after 20 or so yrs) they stop working BUT not suddenly when driving. In this situation you have around 14,2-14,5 volt from the alternator and FP is still working. When shutting down engine and restart it you will NOT have that voltage as starter pulls lot of amperes. Furthermore voltage is now lower during the start process and is not enough to wake up FP as it is sheared or has grate mechanical restriction in it.
So, it is wise to go thru every part in fuel system, from fuel tank to injectors. My 2 kronor.
Good luck with your car jacketfan.

2. I need to replace my shift lever, but for some reason I can't figure out how to get the knob off.

There is a "U" clip that holds the shift knob in place. It is approx. 1 1/4" across the base in size and pulls off of the shift lever towards the passenger side - the shift knob should then pull up and off.

have pfunn

"3. Now that I removed the leather boot, I can't get it to stay down (as soon as I shift, it comes off and it's annoying."

There is a black plastic retainer ring (not a round ring but it is more squared) that needs to be in place to hold the boot in place. It is the size of the base of the boot and approx. 3/16" in section. Make sure that is there and it will hold the boot.

Ha - when the boot slips up like that it reminds me of "Plumbers Butt."

How long has it been since the headlight lifting mechanism was serviced? It could be that it is in bad need of grease. There are Zerk fittings there on the bar/linkage to keep it in smooth operation. It could be that without the service/lubricant it is very sticky and needs the extra voltage to get it to move. White lithium grease is available in a spray can - I use this to spray the exterior of some of the joints that move. Be sure to check and clean all of the electrical connections while you are in there.

If it ever gets to the point where the lights will not flip up no matter what there is a manual knob to turn to lift the lights when necessary. It is on the passengers side of the mechanism and turned by hand to open the lights.

"4- yes they did & still make Dash cap, will run you around $120 depending were you buy it.They come in black or brown colors but can always be tinted to match your interior. That will be your best bet since trying to find a use OE one without cracks will be next to impossible .What kind of wheel? and as far as the paint is concern I will save my money and get a proper job done (if your car is a keeper).
