Timing is controlled by DME.

Not sure of all the differences between S2 and 968 but this is worth a look.
Clark's Garage Home Page CAM-04, Camshaft Chain and Tensioner Replacement (16V) The Timing can easily be off by 120 Degrees if everything was not set up corerctly. The Rotor is the one that can easily be place in the wront 1/3 turn place. Does the S2 not have the adjustable Cam Wheel for +/- 15 degrees as well? The 968 does. Maybe that came only with 968 motor. PIC of 968 adjustable Cam gear. ![]()

The S2 also has that adjustment, but don't mess with it, or you'll be sorry. It's a secondary timing adjustment to adjust the timing between the two camshafts on the 16V cars. Single camshaft cars do not have this, obviously. Setting this adjustment properly requires a procedure involving dial gauges. Mess it up and all you'll do is quite noticeably lose a lot of power.
The computer (ECU) dynamically manages the timing according to many variables from sensors and according to data maps. If you want to change the way it behaves you need to put in a new chip. The consensus is that chipping NA 944 for significant performance gains is largely a waste of time (and fuel) however. What are you trying to achieve anyhow? Or are you just curious how these cars work?
