i wasn't too happy with the one I bought on rennbay...BUT- I have had 0 problems with it though. it looked as if the gear (when it was molded) was off centered and some teeth were longer than the rest. thought that it would not work, but tried it anyway. no problems and for $30 for a plastic gear, if it lasts a couple years, so be it

Their gears come with a lifetime warranty and are made of much more durable material than the OEM. I chalked up the "higher cost" of the $30 as I only want to do it once, the time involved alone was worth never doing it again, the very low production volume for these gears means a fair amount of money in tooling and set up to even try to break even, the limited availability of new gears anywhere else, and the cost of a new or used speedo far out weighs the $30. If they were making millions of them then yes, $30 is crazy.

I understand if you needed to put the not so good looking gear in right away, but I am sure they would have replaced it for free and I think they might have even sucked up the shipping charges if it was a bad gear. They seem to be more than fair over there. Who knows, maybe if you email them they may even send you another one for free to try to keep you happy.

And maybe they sell them to the US Government!

I got mine from RennBay as well, and it was perfect. Took about an hour to get the odometer into place (tiny tiny parts - don't lose them!). But that's becuase we knew already how to take the instrument cluster out in 10 minutes.

I got mine from an odometer repair shop - I think I paid $10. Started off with the Renbay one - but even though the gear was sold as "Euro/km/h" version, the number of teeth was different from mine.

I'm also waiting for a gear from rennbay.
I had trouble counting the inner teeth. I counted 21 -wife 22-daughter 23
They said i had a choice of 22,30, or 32.
I went with the 22 (fingers crossed)

Is it bad that I just don't want to bother with mine? The way I figure it, there's two things going on for me.

1- I don't drive enough to do maintenance by the odometer. I go by months/years for repairs.

2- If I sell the car (a virtual impossibility) I will be truthful about my approximate mileage. If the car gets wrecked (I'm a good driver; however, I've been rear-ended three times in 6 years) the insurance won't know about it

There's about fifteen other things my car needs done first.

well the reason why i want to do the odometer asap is that if I go to sell and someone looks up my cars history- which shows New Zealands 6-monthly road worthiness vehicle testing (WOF- Warrant of Fitness)- i prefer not to make up some story about being too busy to upkeep my car.

refer my Odometer history here: PORSCHE 944 1988 (in Green) : Plate:Â PT4576 | CarJam

My car has reasonably low km's which is a good selling point. With 944 reliability very questionable about the very small amount of 944's in the country, I'd be suspicious about a car that didn't consistently have WoF in a reasonable amount of time.

The one I got from Renbay was a 20x21 (21 teeth on smaller wheel). It did not fit. The correct size (at least for an S2 Australian spec) is 20x23. Travis said he didn't stock the 20x23 after I mentioned that I got the wrong part.

Photo below is the wrong part after installed. You can see how the inside wheel dia is too small.

Good luck.

I'm having problems with my rennbay gear. It has stopped working 6 times in under 2700 miles. It is currently broken again. It jams up because the teeth are not cut well and there was that burr that I had to file. I've had to take my odometer apart each time and file it down.

I want to know where I can get one other than Rennbay. I don't care about their warranty if they manufacture crap. I'm not replacing crap with crap.

Any odometer repair shop would sell them. I just walked in to one near to where I live and they said yeah got those - it is the same one that goes in a Mack truck!

Did you try odometergears.com ? They sell them.

Try Performance Parts or 944online for the odometer gears for 944.
