Resetting Timing

I just recently purchased an 84 NA 944 and I took the engine out to do a complete inspection and a basic rebuild. I had the #1 cylinder at TDC, but during removal of the clutch and flywheel assembly I did not have a flywheel lock in place but rather had someone holding the crank pulley. There was some movement in the crankshaft and because the timing belt wasn't on I am concerned that the timing is off. Is the solution as simple as realigning all the timing marks on the cam sprocket and elsewhere? I apologize if this has been covered in a previous thread, but a search of the forums did not lead me to instructions. I can't wait to get this thing back together and on the road. The previous owner was letting it go downhill maintenance-wise and I feel like I'm saving it.

There is a notch in the flywheel that centers in a window in the bottom of the bellhousing (easiest, IMO). There is also a window and TDC mark near the crank sensors.

Bookmark Clarks-Garage.com
go to workshop manual then find
ENG-13, Locating and Setting Engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder 1

Good info and pics.
IF the cam sprocket is aligned with it's mark, I would just put the crank back to TDC (per clark's), install the t-belt and turn engine by hand to make sure there is no interference.

Flywheel has locating pin to crank. So put it back , (with new flywheel fastners) Flywheel is stamped with o - t (o = oben german / or TOP in ENGLISH) This gash must be aligned in bell housing window viewed from top ; to align with aluminum cast "finger' . this is TDC . Now if you align camshaft gash with cam housing finger you have TDC FIRE CYL # 1......... (#4 cyl is on TDC OVERLAP) Good luck stahwille

While the bell housing and flywheel is off it is a good idea to use a small triangle file to freshen up the grooves in the flywheel, clean with paint thinner and put White paint in the groove, O, and T. You can scrape off excess after the paint drys. Cut the bell housing away where the Speed and Reference Sensors go into it. The cut will form a "U" and make it easy to remove bell housing in the future without having to remove the Sensors. Do you have the engine on a stand? If you do flip it belly up to remove the main crank shaft cradle to replace the main bearings and replace the bolts with new ones, same with the rods and use the specified lock tight. The rear main bearing has to be seated all the way in to prevent oil leaks. Check the oil pick up tube for cracks. When you go to put the oil pan gasket on, use dental floss to tie it in place on the pan until you have all the bolts started and then remove the floss. I am going to do the same as you are doing now with an 86 engine I bought. Best of luck with your rebuild.
