Need Purchase Advice on this 968

I am looking at this 1994 968 listed here on Pelican.

FS: 94 968 coupe

I am a 911 owner and not overly familiar with this series car. I was looking to use it for DE/light track use this summer. Really like the car but what is a fair price? History is largely unknown except for the last 2-3 years. Timing Belt, tensioner, water pump and fuel pump, and one rear wheel bearing have been done in the last 5K.......currently 66.5K. No mention of clutch, which I have read should be due around 60K.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I have added the only photos he had available. I would be buying sight unseen with PPI.

What's with the dash cover?? Is the car in Arizona maybe? I guess that would be common if it's from there.

yeah the car is in Arizona, and that's one of those ugly, but useful, dash pad protectors from the nasty sun, protects from UV cracks.

I had a 94 968 before my Boxster S. It had LSD and M030 suspension and was a great car for both street and track events. The engine had great torque and the car had excellent handling. One of the problems with the 968s was that a number of the transaxles were shimmed incorrectly from the factory which eventually caused a whine and some failures in the trans. It was an expensive repair. Other than a clutch, I had no problems with the car.

There was a 968 registry at one time. If they are still in existence, they would be a good source regarding price.

Make sure you have a complete pre-buy inspection by a reliable shop before you close the deal.

968s are great cars.

I would guess they left the dash cover in place for the pictures because the dash pad is already badly cracked. Other than that, looks really nice.

This car is like this beautiful Newfie song "OLD FOGGY DAYS" not to much infos about it can be had from the owner so be careful my friend & tried to find somebody out there to check it out first & have a reliable source to get the PPI done before you put your money down.

i buy and sell alot of rear and exotic cars . what i do when i'm buying a car is go to a sight like kelley blue book and cragslist , ebay get as many buy it now prices you can for the car your looking to get then come up with an average price . this is also how an insurance co. comes up with a price when rear cars get totaled . so if your going to insure your car and say you paid 12k for it just make dam sure you have the cars coverage for the price you paid for the car . but the average price for a 968 coupe 6 speed in excellent condition is about 10.5 k . i just picked one up 3 weeks ago for 11k very clean 44k miles black on black torsen split dif. with all service records .

Thanks 962, that's typically my approach as well. I have purchased two 911's in the last year and both had full service and ownership history so I am conscious of the drill. The lack of history on this one is really going to hurt his price, I was thinking at best 10K and that is with a very clean PPI. From my little research to date, I'm expecting this car is in need of, or soon will be, a clutch. So I may just look at this one as a learning experience.

968's are the top of the Chain. But still relatively rare. Ask Flash968. Parts are a little more than 944's.
Check the Cam Tensioners/timing chain were changed. Due about 110K miles. 100$ parts and will kill you engine if they fail. Not many Porsche Mechanics can do the job correctly!
Other than the usual 944 Belt checks are the priorty. Rod bearing #3 rather than #2 tend to fail if left low on oil or RPM's over 6500. Looks Sweet from here.
Compression test for 200 PSI+ on all, Prior to buy. (IE check for head Gasket failure)
Listen to tranmission on deceleration (throttle off) for gravel sound (pinon bearing on way out)

Main belt tensioner is auto/hydrolic, so it's not so critical to check.
Stock MAF is way better than the air box on 944's.
IAC is pretty good.

Great cars when they are good condition.
Car lines are still super car and without age.

My Friend,

If you just bought her, I'd say I hope she's perfect.
Otherwise from the very brief description and pictures would say it's in line with correct current prices for a well taken care of low mileage 968. And a sharpe looker. Arizona and California are excellent places to buy cars since we have much less rain, rust, or snow. Arizona has little smog control, so the emissions on the car are not required as good as CA per State regulation.

Let's leave the females out of the discussions with our "Ladies".
My P-Ladies usually last much longer ;+)

Cheers.

Yes Jimmy the P-Ladies do not see the "non-logic" in our car purchases, but then again is there any logic unless they are getting a "vacation" to pick up a car. I was looking forward to this one to drive the famous Route 66.

I think I'm taking a pass on this one.......for lack of history.

I have owned my 968 for 6 years now. It could be the twin of the one you are looking at. My own experience is that they are great cars. The motors are very hardy and tight. They should not burn a drop of oil if looked after properly. As stated, the number one concern is the water pump/ timing belt issue. If there are bills to support this, then you are fine. The pinion can be an annoying issue and expensive to repair. Most of these should have been fixed by now. On a smaller note, the rear hatch window seals break loose (as mine has) and cause the most irritating noise and allow water into the trunk area. This can be expensive to get right. If these cars had another 75-100 horse power (968 turbo?) it would probably be one of the greatest cars ever built. My 968 handles and rides much better than my 911 turbo.

Cheers
