Wheel play/ ball joint

Howdy everybody! I recently had my car inspected and it was failed for a bad ball joint. Having said that, I'm not entirely sure that is a correct diagnosis. The wheel has a very small amount of play at the 6 & 12 o'clock positions. I'm really suprised they failed it, as I've had a car with far worse issues pass. Anyways, there is less than 1/16th of an inch of lateral movement at the top and bottom of the tire. I know that is often due to bad ball joints, but I can't feel any play in the ball joint. I've disconected the ball joint from the spindle, and it appears to be tight; I can't feel any play in it. I've checked the wheel bearing as well. What other areas should I check? Are there any other ways to check the ball joint?

You need to be feeling the ball joint while someone else is doing the 6-12-push-pull on the wheel. The only other thing besides loose bearings that could cause that play, is worn or bad control arm bushings.

I recently saw a car that had very loose Strut Camber bolts that gave play similar to bad/loose wheel bearing. The ones at base of strut to Spindal.

Otherwise 6-12 = Wheel bearing or C-Arm ball joints.
3-9 play = Steering rack ball joints.

Well, I retract my statement. I pulled the ball joints apart and the cups are rubish. Anywho, I guess it's time for a rebuild eh?

I just posted a WTB add for a passenger control arm with a good ball joint. It might be easier to just swap the arm if someone has one they are willing to part with for cheap.

Rennbay has ball joint kits. I would suggest the Track/Performance Ball Joint Kit... I would also suggest replacing both at the same time. If one side is bad the other will be or will be soon.

That's what I've ordered. Hopefully they work.
