Wiper problem

Anyone seen problems with the wiper stopping in the wrong position. Doing it all the time now. Intermittent or just turning them off, they stop pointing straight up. Is this a motor or linkage or switch in the steering wheel problem?

I know they do that if you put the wrong relay in - perhaps your relay failed?

Are you saying that they were working OK, and then they just began stopping in the wrong spot? If so, it's possible that the 13mm nut that secures the bell crank to the gearbox output shaft has loosened up and allowed the bellcrank to move. Try loosening up the nut with a wrench, move the wipers to the desired stopped location, and then tighten up the nut.

I'll try to explain a little more. I have no pictures of the hardware so not sure what the parts are that are refered to.

On intermitant wiper, they seem to work fine and resting spot is down in the correct position. If I have them on either speed of consistant wipe and turn them off, they always stop pointing straight up??? Then I just have to keep tapping the lever till there down.

Bad wiper relay.

OK, going back to this problem. Stored for the winter so i have time. How can it be a relay? It doesn't control position, only on or off. When ever i use it it stops half way up the windshield. Only on intermitant wiper does it go all the way down to the correct position.

Wow, winter lasts from January through September... Now is the time to change locations.

The wiper relay is pretty complicated and has the intermittent timer circuits as well as the relay. The circuitry inside also manages making sure the wipers park in the right spot using the contacts embeded on the big gear inside the wiper motor to keep track of position. If any wiring or contacts going to the wiper motor positioning are iffy, or if the circuitry in the relay is bad, weird things will happen. Mine randomly wacked out and ran without turning them on, or not running when I turn them on. I just took the relay out and they have been completely manual for several years since I never took the time to figure out the wiring and never got around to getting ahold of a known good relay.

If the relay box is located under the dash on your 87 (wiper relay will be X -10):)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1289318930.jpg
