Red face Testing Second Fan

Recently my '84 944 NA blew the lower radiator hose. The nearest safe haven was a Honda dealer. The dealer replaced the hose, fluid, thermostat, gasket and o-ring. (at the tune of $237). I made sure the dealer used phosphate free anti-freeze and bled the head using the pressure test method. However, since then I have noticed during stop and go traffic the temperature will rise about 1/2 bar. As soon as I reach 40 mph cruising it goes down. I have bled the air out of the cooling system until I no longer get any air at all. This has helped. The primary fan is functional and continues to run after the car is turned off. However, I do not think the second fan is working. Is there a way to test the second fan to determine if the problem is the fan ($200) or the terma-switch ($20)?

second fan

You could connect the fan directly to the battery to see if its working. BUT BE CAREFUL! IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS SAFELY, DON'T DO IT!

You should also look at the fan relay. Try removing it, cleaning the connectors, and replacing it.

Brian,

Think they're both supposed to come on when the AC is on.

That may be a problem since the AC does not function. I have not looked into this problem yet.

Brian,

You said "half bar" unless you have the lower temp thermo switch, your fan shouldn't come on until 3/4 bar.

1/2 BAR

By 1/2 bar I mean 1/2 above the normal center position of the temperature gauge.

Your fan is suppose to turn on at the red arrow mark and turn off at the blue arrow mark etc.....
I also have an 84 944na and mine use to go up into the solid yellow before my fan kicked on, notice I said fan, The only time my second one comes on is when the ac is turned on.-- back to my story--> well it ended up being my temp thermo switch that turns the fan on at a certain temp and turns it off at a certain temp. I got a lower temp one and it works fine now.

Cool

The temp gauge was rock solid at the blue mark on your picture. Then the thermostat and radiator hose was replaced. Since then the temp is at the blue mark when cruising and raises to your red mark when doing the stop and go thing. It is becoming less and less as I bleed the air from the system. My concern was that it was moving at all. Noticing two fans I was concerned one was not working.

I didn't see it mentioned here, but make sure that the temperature selector knob inside car is set all the way to hot, with the blower on high. You'll never get it bled if you don't. Good luck.
