944 hatch problem
 

Hi all - new member here from, you guessed it, London. Pic of my Porsche below by way of introduction, and very well it's done me too for the last two and a half years. I did have one issue you might be able to help me with.

The left rear hatch pin no longer locks in place. Peering into the hole it looks like an element of the locking ring has come adrift, which would explain the lack of lockability. Has anyone else experienced this? And is it possible to replace the whole 'female' element of the lock, which looks like it can be unbolted from the rear panel. With all these damn speed bumps here in London, driving it has to be putting pressure on the other pin.

The amount of dirt and debris that collects in that part will scare you. The lower catch is easy to remove with two nuts each side. Clean it out and lube it and reinstall. I have replacements if yours is broken

Remove #27 and #26 will fall into your hand when you move the release stem.

are the two halves of the lock ring stuck in the "in" position? if so, then it's just dirt. just clean it out like griffin suggested.

if the two halves are moving freely by hand then u need to adjust the pin so it reaches in more. it's a 13mm wrench if i remember correctly.

Thanks for the replies. The locking ring is permanently pushed out, so it might just be grime. I'll have a go at (carefully) dismantling it to see if it's stuck. Otherwise it's new-part time.

Thanks for that, but scary shipping costs. Rear lock $35 - shipping $40! Think I'll use the exploded diagram to guide myself to fix it.

Get in the back, pull the carpet back and you will see the two latches... they are held on with 10mm nuts.... Pull those nuts off and you will have the latches... My best advice would be to take them off the connecting rods and clean them in hot soapy water.... Get them functioning properly and then lube them back up and reinstall...

if you over tighten the 2 10mm nuts, Ive found it pinches the locking mech. and will give you trouble.

Excellent. All it took to release the locking ring was to loosen the 10mm nuts. A bit of WD40, tighten the nuts and voila. Very useful 10 mins that. Thanks for all your help guys

Same colour as your old car - for some reason I think it's Sahara Beige (best name for gold I've ever heard). Interesting mods on yours, but you Americans really do lose out on licence plate location don't you!

Yeah, removing the front plate isn't an option we've got. How would those forward facing speed cameras pick you up!

Would you miss getting speed tickets? That's how i roll for the last 2 years,no problems whatsoever,and no speed tickets. I really like how it looks without it even if i have the proper location where to mount it:) I first kept it on the dashboard and when i got tired of all the rattling i thrown it in the boot. I'd love to be able to do that! But the UK is super tough on numberplates - you even get pulled over and fined if the numbers or letters are spaced wrong (which some people do to make the plate spell something) or even are written in the wrong font.

But at least the front and rear are designed for the long Euro rectangular plate - even if we Britishers suffered with initial right-hand-drive penny pinching like no switchover for the front and rear wipers and the bonnet release.
