New Member.

I have a 1986 944 Base. I was going to try and sell another car and buy and audi s4. But I was think and said why not put that money into my Porsche? I need to put a new dash in, the one that I have is cracked. The drivers seat is messed up. I want to restore it and make it look a lot better. I don't know a lot about cars so it will be a learning experience.
I am new to this forum.

Thanks
Christian

dashing good fun

You might be able to rebuild the dash with fiberglass bondo. I did it and although 2 cracks have returned a bit, it still looks pretty good. WYAI, the Air box can be rebuilt and that adds a lot to the driving pleasure. I would go with the Classic Porsche. Better the devil you know and all that.

I could try that! I have a carpet cover over it now so you can't see it. What is the air box? Like the air filter?

Sol makes the extremely difficult look easy and if you searched for his thread on rebuilding the heater vent system, you will have a lot of information on the companion job to do when you get the dash fixed.

If you wanted a Pro to do it look at Classic 9 Leather Shop Porsche Interior Restoration Automobile Reupholstery Craftsman

Money? you will soon loose all common sense when it comes to your Porsche.

air box

I might be using the wrong name. I am speaking about the box that sits under the dash in the center. It is impossible to remove without removing the dash. Dust and junk accumulate in there and when the fan is on it smells...well like a 20 something year old car. Additionally the Flaps that control the air flow decay and don't seal well. I rebuilt the dash and box when I went in there for the Heater core. With a good HVAC system, your driving experience is considerably enhanced.

Update the seats with some power leather seats from a later turbo, keep the car clean and properly maintained, and they can go for 300K or more. You just have to get used to the timing belt PM and keep up with the stuff that breaks. I have never heard of one of these motors "wearing out" with use, they usually die by eating a valve or getting junked for some peripheral system failure.

A properly maintained 944 will keep up with the best of them, however, to be honest a new Audi would probably be more dependable. Your call.

There are also "dash caps" available if the cracks are really bothering you. It is a shame that Porsche built the dash out of vinyl covered plywood rather than something...hec...anything more durable.

For my heat/ac. I think I need the whole new control unit. I am not sure if it is the compressor. Im worried that if I put in a new one in it might just burn up. And they are like $600 bucks each.

My mechanic had someone price out reupholstering the seats for like $400.

How do you pictures on here? There is the button but it requires a url.

My car has over 200 k miles, the ODO went out for about 10 k miles then it started to work again.

Oh, thanks. I was only using the quick reply.

Sorry for the quality I had to take them on my iphone. The paint is actually a lot more red, than it looks in the pictures.
