Weird noise when shifting into 2 or 4

'86 944 150k unknown clutch life

Within the last 4 months, when I shift from any gear to 2nd or 4th, I sometimes hear a hollow sounding clunk - almost like I banged a wrench on the torque tube or something.

Doesn't happen all the time, and if I'm real easy - not at all.

Going into or coming out of any or the gears is smooth as butter, it's just that noise is bugging me.

When I got the car the shifter rattled like crazy, so I replaced the pin on the shifter and used a spring washer to take up any remaining slack. That's worked great, but recently it started vibrating again. My fix seems to still be tight, so I suspected pieces down the line. I crawled underneath and felt the levers and all seemed to be OK. I ended up stuffing some foam in between the shift rod and the torque tube and the vibrating stopped.

Any ideas?

An easy check on the clutch disc is in Clarks.
Stick a deep well socket that just fits between the bell housing and fork. Then measure the socket.
Checking Clutch Disc Wear

If by "unknown" you mean you do not know if you have a rubber or spring clutch disc, disconnect the battery, remove the starter, poke your finger deep into the bell housing feeling for small bits of rubber. If tiny bits are found, be really gentle on the clutch until you do the clutch job.

The clunk could be a burned out clutch pilot bearing that the drive shaft fits into on the flywheel.
Or it could be a cracked TO-throw out bearing "guide tube".

Only if you find out about the "unknown" can you be sure.
