I was reading an article regarding "944 bearing noise in manual tranny". My car makes the same sound. Engine running, vehicle stationary, gearbox in neutral and clutch engaged. When I dis-engage the clutch I get a worn bearing, chattering sound--and it's intermittent. There are so many possible bearings-torque tube or input shaft bearings, and all the bearings in the gearbox. My question is-Do I get a rebuilt gearbox or replace the bearings and syncros/dog teeth in the one I have. Which is cheaper? Can't find any info on the net regarding rebuilt trannys. Please no guesses. 87 944 127K. The article was found in 911&Porsche World, Number 91, page 116.

to me, it sounds like your thrust bearing is making that noise. thrust bearing is the one makes contact with the clutch pressure plate when you depress the clutch pedal. making clutch to disengage.
if your are to replace that bearing, you also should check other clutch components for wear and tear. good luck,,, ![]() |

it would be cheaper to find a used tran and swap it out. also, i think the noise is your throwout bearing (i had a similar noise, and fixing the throwout bearing got rid of the noise).
good luck! obin
