Installing Engine - Lost In Wires!!!
Helllo Folks,
I am installing my engine after a very long time of having it out (approx 9 months) and I can't remember where all these wires connect. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/shake.gif Does anybody have pictures or diagrams of where these many wires, harnesses, and hoses go? Would somebody post several pictures of their 944's engine bay? A close up between the rear of the engine and firewall would be very helpful. I tried to find the only other guy in town with a 944, but he cannot be located. Thanks, Mike 1983 Porsche 944 p.s. For those who are going to pull your engine, get the removal on video!!! |
unless you're in a very small town, it is likely there are other 944's floating around. A wiring diagram would be your best bet. The repair manual would be helpful for about $15 or so at your local auto parts store though I'm sure you could just print one from the internet.
I recently bought two Midgets with all the wiring taken apart so I know I will have similar issues. I've been collecting as many pictures as I can of the engine bay and those I can find of various wire routes. I have a restoration manual, a hanes manual, and two versions of factory repair manuals besides the moss motorsports manual with lots of diagrams. Hit that google button and see what you find. |
yea there's def a bunch of wires...4 fuel injector clips, 2 alternator hookups, 3 start hookups, engine coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sender, ever important speed/ref sensors, then engine ground in the back....and im' sure there's others i haven't remembered

I have a whole second engine in my garage on the stand that someone cut out...very handy in referring to while I rebuild #1. Take a picture of your wire ends and I will take a closeup of where they go.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1271459785.jpg Where do the two grounds mount? Where does the starter motor wire (there's a butt splice on mine) connect? Since mine is broken, can I replace it with a straight wire or do I need to get a new connector? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1271459840.jpg Where does one mount the wiring harness? Thanks a million!!! |
starter has 3 wires going to it. the 2 smaller wires are on the same terminal IIRC.
those two grounds go on either side of the black grounding block where your big grounding wire is already connected |

I will literally be doing the same thing of posting a pic of connections/wires and asking where they go in the MG forums. Those wiring digrams become a blur after 30 min of trying to trace. Bleh, best of luck. |
Yeah the wiring diagram in Haynes is pretty bad...looks like a photocopy of a napkin.
Will get those pictures in the morning when it is light out. |
Here is where the ground wire goes. You don't want to see my harness or starter connection, a lot of undoing to be done there. I love previous owners that know just enough to make a mess.

Ahh...so now I know where to mount that and the wiring harness. The piece that you have your thumb on is the starter connector that I need to replace. One: Where does that wire connect and Two: Since mine is broken, can I replace it with a straight wire or do I have to have the piece replaced? (see previous picture showing my broken part).
Also, I am at a loss of exactly where the vacuum lines connect. If someone could post pics of those, I would be most grateful. Thanks!!! |
I'm right behind you lol. Got to this point about an hour ago. Going to replace all the vacuum hoses, prob on Wed night. I'll let you know what I find between now and then if no one else responds.

And this. It says 1985.5+ but I can't find one for our cars. It looks pretty close to our early models, so hopefully if there is a difference someone will chime in.

Thanks!!! |
i have a 83 myself i just transplanted a 87motor into, looks like your on a roll if you find something that doesnt add up ill help where i can to :). those 2 ground wires you have pointed out in the picture attach to the rear end of the block if you hadnt found that already.

Cool. Do you have any info on my previously mentioned "starter motor wire connector" dilema?
Thanks |
Well I am working on it right now, so its half being nice and half I have to look it up anyway. All I am doing is searching this forum, clarks garage, and google. Nothing ground breaking here, enough people have had to work on the same things in the past where the info should be floating around the internet somewhere.
