Does this Look right? Coolant in block valleys.
Ordered my head gasket set from pelican and doing some prep for the head replace.
Is there supposed to be coolant down in the valleys around the cylinders? I am thinking if there is NOT supposed to be, it got in there when we took the head off and it still had some coolant in it. Also, is a early 2.5 944 head with a bent valve worth anything? Should I just buy a new valve and install it for $25 bucks and then sell the head? Thanks again, this forum is invaluable. Zach.

That is exactly where the coolant circulates! Very normal!

+1 ^ its normal, if you want to get it all out there is a drain plug on the block you can remove and let it drain out completely. its located next to the oil cooler or oil pressure sender if yours has been removed

If all you are going to do is buy a replacement valve for the head, its not worth anymore than before. Needs a full valve job before it can be installed, plus seals and possibly valve guides if it was truly bent.
Is the valve visually bent, or does it just not come out of the guide?

The valve is broken on the shaft by the head of the valve.

Def don't buy a replacement valve unless its a courtesy to the guy you are selling to. And some people would go as far as saying you shouldn't replace just a single valve on a used head.

The firewall engine galley, rear, bottom-----------is where you may find silver sludge. Drain the coolant and clean up the gally bottoms.
Also, check your lifters: http://www.benms.com/944lifter.html

broken head
There is someone on the board that collects old heads for the cause and rebuilds them. I don't think 1 bad valve will dissuade him. Not sure if it is worth a whole lot though. I think he sells the reman heads to people in your situation.

yep!
Yea, i wasn't imagining things...It is "many944s" and this thread gives the details. Talk to this guy as he knows a lot more about it than I do.
Anyone have a 8v NA head with bent valves?

I haven't been able to get in contact with many944's for a long time. I have a head I tried to get to him and just quit hearing from him. I still have the head and just about can't give it away. Its not even bad... I just don't want it.

odd...
That IS strange....His last logon date was in August of LAST year. I hope he is doing well. Hopefully we can get a response from him sometime reasonably soon. When it comes to the down and dirty questions about heads, he usually has the answer.
Does anyone else have info on Many944s or a good reputable re builder who could use the core? I can ask my favorite machinist, but, I am not sure he wants to expand into this niche market. And I don't have the equipment to do it right.
