Alarm replacement?

[cross-posted from rennlist...no answers there!]

I picked up a new car that has a factory alarm (1990 S2). I did some searching on it here, but it seems like most of the responses are "Don't touch it" or "Bypass it" (which i found instructions for).

My question is--what does it do? It doesn't seem to have a siren anywhere, so i assume it just kills the starter. Mine also doesn't have the weird 3rd lock cylinder. How does it know when to disable? Was there a keyfob i didn't get?

I've got a decent aftermarket alarm that i'd like to install in its place. Seems like it would be pretty easy to just swap one out for the other. Does anybody have the wiring diagram for the alarm? It's not even mentioned in my shop manual set.

Beware of using those bypass instructions on the very late cars - many people have mentioned that it is incorrect and that they almost melted their wiring harnesses.

The '90+ S2's had a fob for the alarm AFAIK, and there was no key behind the driver's door like the earlier alarms.

It will kill the fuel as well as set off the alarm horn (Behind your battery).

Cheers, Keith

Good to know, thank you!

Any idea where i could find a wiring diagram for it? I don't have the fob, so that could be a problem!

I have a 1990 S2 and it's not starting after sitting for a couple of months. The battery died and when i recharged it, the alarm was freaking out. Now that the battery is charged and the car turns over, it still won't start. I think my alarm is turned on and off using the key locks in the door handle. There is a small LED in the top of each door lock 'knob'.

I checked for spark when i am cranking it over, and i don't think there is any spark. i suspect the alarm and was going to follow clarks alarm bypass procedure, but i am actually having problems finding it. it is not in the same place as my brother's 1989 NAs one is.

does the alarm cut the fuel or spark or both? anyone know where the alarm is on the late late 944s? or how to bypass if the clarks procedure is not right?

i found the alarm, duh. it's tucked in behind the DME, clipped onto a piggyback bracket that attaches with the same screws as the DME.

yup, that bypass procedure from clarks melts the insulation on the pin4 wire, a brown one.

still looking for advice on bypassing late 944 alarm.
