starting problems 1985.5 944

Help. when I start my 1985 1/2 i can only get it going when i spray some starter fluid in the air cleaner. it turns over perfectly but will not start without the starter fluid. it will run fine from then on. I can also start it back rolling it to start. it seems that the spark or fuel delivery are not working correctly but the porsche mechanic and the local guy are stumped.

any ideas?

Based on your symptoms, either a bad DME relay or a bad Brain (dme).
