Hi i have a 1980 924 turbo that i am bringing back to life after sitting for ? years i have the car running changed the water pump and timing belt plus a few other parts. my problem is when i try to engage the clutch in first gear it grinds when i place it 2nd or any other gear no grind even reverse no grind i haven't driven the car out of the driveway so i'm not sure what it would do. do you think this is a slave cylinder problem an adjustment, or a transmission problem BTW the trans has been changed to a 944 transmission by the P.O no dogleg or snail type. any clues?

First things first... is there lube in the transmission?

Wouldn't hurt to do a full, good bleed on the clutch hydraulics... that's at least free...

sounds like a syncro is worn....specially as u can get all the other gears easily....just get that replaced

hi thanks is this job difficult to do if i use ramps and jack stands .... can an average joe do this job or does it have to be brought into a shop. or can they be accessed thru the shifter. or is it in the rear where the transmision is located ?

Hi, if you are talking about the syncro you will have to pull the transaxle and have someone take it apart for a rebuild. You could always find a good used working transaxle and put it in. I have never owned a 924 but believe the transaxles looked like the 944 na at some point but are differentMaybe only a 4 speed and not as beefy. You mentioned that you thought that you had a 944 transaxle in and this may not be the case. ?

thanks ... yes the car does not have the original transaxale it was changed by the p.o ... so if it is the syncros then it has to be dropped fixed and then reinstalled. or pick up a used working transaxale and swap them out? o.k

its much easier and cheaper to buy a used working transaxle and install it, plus you can rebuild the one in the car and have a spare around
