Hi guys,
I replaced the Alternator-A/C belt last summer (Conti from Pelican) and yesterday it snaped and pushed the PS belt as well (PS belt did not brake). The alternator pulley rolls freely as it should and the A/C pulley rolls freely as well. Any ideas why it broke? When it happened I had the A/C on. Is there a chance the A/C pump froze and if so how can I test it without the belt? Thanks, George. |

If the alternator spins freely...
Did you have your AC charged for the season recently? You could energize the AC clutch coil (turn the AC switch on) and try to hand spin the compressor. Too much AC oil may have damaged the compressor??? GL John

can't you turn the compressor by turning the front part of the pulley?

I had the A/C charged with original R-12 last summer by the same mechanic that did the timing belt etc as well as the alternator- A/C and PS belts. The A/C worked fine until the belt broke yesterday. The alternator spins freely as well as the A/C pulley. I energized the A/C by turning the key to accessories and turn the A/C knob ON. I tried the compressor by hand and it spins with just some resistance which I think is normal. I can not think of the reason the belt snaped. Any chance of missalignment? Should I put on new belts and see what happens?

The compressor, Look at the mounting tabs "ears" and check to see if one may have cracked.
Do the same for the alternator. The resistance on the compressor is normal with the clutch engaged and the internals of the compressor pumping. GL John

check
Check that the alternator pulley has the same number of grooves as the crank pulley in case you have a rabbit pulley. Next check alignment with a piece of string.
Let me know what you find

Hi guys,
I checked everything, adjusting rods, alternator and compressor mounting tabs, everything is fine. Installed new belts and started car. Both belts run straight and true. Everything is good. I can not even guess what happened. Belt was a new Conti with less than 8,000 miles on it that got shredded to thin strips wrapped around the engine pulley!!! Many thanks to all of you for your thoughts, you are GREAT !!! |
