Drain the transaxle fluid and use a piece of cloth to catch the fluid over the top of the pail.
If you see silver slivers--bad. On the passenger side is a large inspection plate with many bolts. Drop the axle. Like you mentioned, there is a bolt inside of the transaxle hub----remove it and the stub hub will pull out. Remove all the bolts around the inspection plate (passenger side) Remove the inspection plate and check for gears that have teeth chiped. Grab the ring and pinion and check for slop. If you find any of these issues-------get a used transaxle. I know your can rebuild the transaxle, but for the $1500 in parts plus labor it is expensive. GL John

Sounds like the diff carrier bearings are shot. Some have gotten away with changing them without resetting the R&P clearance, but it can be a tricky job.

If by bearings, do you mean CV joints?
It is usually cheaper to get a complete axle than replace 1 CV joint. CV Joints - General Information, Removal, Installation, and Maintenance John
