Should I hone and re-ring?

I asked in my log but didnt get any responses.

Also should I replace all my bearings? How do I know if they need replacing? Should I just replace them and that be that? What about my balance shaft bearings? Replace them too?

My generic answer is...how much are the parts while you are already this deep? Its a risk/economic question.

Ehhh well,... not worried to much on the cost of the a parts to replace rings, bearings, and seals. But if it has to be done,... thats several hundred to have a shop hone my cylinders and clean up the block. also several hundred to polish, check, balance my crank. Along with flywheel and pressure plate too. I could easily walk away and say its fine. but if I did that,... i wouldnt sleep at night. So,... I need honest opinions on the condition of my cylinders. If they need to be done they need to be done. If you guys think I should seriously replace all my bearings,... I will.

Im more worried about the process involved with replacing the bearings and rings. I have never done it so I am nervous. I'll get over it though and get it done right.

Also,... if I had to hone, would I do it myself like what HondaDustR did and save some money or do I have a shop do it? I wouldnt mind doing it myself because I like doing things myself. But this is a serious task. I really dont want to screw it up. I dont think I will but the idea scares me.

Also,... the scratched area on Cyl#3, what causes that? A worn bearing? Its not the bad. I have seen worse. But it looks like that now. will it get worse if I do nothing? I am pretty damn sure the PO replaced the rod bearings. Maybe that scratched area was before his bearing replacement.

I used to be a mechanic many moons ago, but since then have owned alot of crappy cars that needed fixing. I've never taken my 944 engine apart, but I've re-ringed several engines myself by borrowing (for free) from my local parts store a cylinder hone that attaches to a 3/8 drill and a ring compressor. Unless, for some reason, that's a no-no on these motors, it's pretty simple to do. The hone I prefer is the kind with hundreds of abrasive balls on the ends of wires, kind of like a big bottle brush. As long as you get the right size hone for your cylinder, it's hard to screw it up. I guess you could over-hone it to outside the spec for the rings, but I've never seen it happen. If your worried about it, I guess you could take it to your local Pick-N-Pull yard and practice on a car that's had the head pulled.

I've done this on engines that had fairly bad grooves and blow-by bad enough to be smoking and burning oil. Always worked great, with one exception. One time I didn't measure the cylinder top, bottom and center. The rings seated for a short time then started smoking again. When I tore it back apart I found the bad cylinders were actually wider in the middle, too much for just a re-ring and needed to be bored out.

And, I'd definitley replace the rod bearings at the very least.

Bores are alusil - honing of the kind described will not work on these engines. Do a search on honing these bores and it's a VERY interesting read. I wouldn't hone unless absolutely necessary. Do you know what your compression was before you tore down?

You've got the engine this far apart, just go ahead and do it.

the scotchbrite and AN-30 proceedure is pretty easy to do and is pretty hard to screw up. Just follow HondaDustR's proceedure. Rings are pretty easy too. Just be sure to check the end gap.

Replace all the bearings.

Yes I know. But its been done with great results so im going to give it a go. Thanks for the heads up though.

This is correct - be careful, if you don't use the proper method, you will merely remove the silica which protects the alusil bores. The rings will eat through the bore in no time. It's worth reading the FWM.

I have seen mixed results.
