Help: Automatic Damper Plate to Manual Clutch

I have a 1987 924S that I've been restoring on and off for some time. The body/interior is nearly perfect. The motor was shot, but I have a 60k mile motor ready to go in it. I just installed new shocks, new control arms, new tie rods, sport springs infront, and turbo swaybars. Despite being an auto, it should be a fun little driver.

So when I pulled the motor I discovered it's about time for a new damper. I'd like to make sure I don't need to change the damper 10k miles after I install the new motor. I'd like to replace the rubber damper with a manual clutch.

I have searched and found a number of posts about doing this, but nothing as far as a complete parts list. I have a compete manual clutch assembly including flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, bell housing, etc.

Assume that I can simply install the manual flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate and call it a day. Am I missing anything? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
-bj

You are missing the pedal, master cylinder, slave cylinder, hydraulic hose, fork, and possibly some brackets.

No, I'm not wanting to convert to a manual, simply replace the ruber damper with the manual clutch assembly. The damper needs to be replaced. Since I have all the extra manual parts I'd rather use them than spend $1000 for a new damper.

I mean I could convert it to a manual. I do have two extra manual transaxles, but then I'd need a manual torque tube, half shafts, peddle asemmble, etc. This is a DD, not a track car--I have enough of those.

Thanks,
-bj

Oh, OK. My 1st P-car was a 77 924 automatic. Truthfully, I hate automatics, but I was unable to pass up on the opportunity. What I can say in favor of it, is that it was probably the most solid automatic transmission that I ever beat upon. I accidentally pushed the button on the shifter once as I was downshifting when starting to climb a mountain. As I struggled to quickly pull it out of 1st @72mph, I witnessed the tach wind all the way around past 9 or 10 grand. The only damage was a pie slice missing from the head of one of the exhaust valves. Must have floated it, I guess.

Here is what I think you need to know.

Late model 944 manual clutch assembly into a late model automatic. In this case, the automatic transmission stays in.

No parts list, this is OJT job.

I'm going to get going on this soon. I'll take some pics and document my findings.

I don't know if it helps anyone or not, but the first time the plate failed on my 77 924, it was the splined part that the collar goes over that broke. I welded one from a (other make) used clutch disc onto it, and it held for a while. But when the rubber part later failed, so I ended up putting another one (from a JY) on it. I do remember that the shifts on that transmission were very hard - placing a great deal of stress on the rubber plate.

It is not that bad to convert to 5-sp. I have done 4 conversions. You already have most of the parts. It is a bolt in operation with no fab work required. The only thing you have to cut is the bracket that hold the auto shifter down. I always switch out the tt. Some folks don't and just drill the holes for the shifter. As far as installing a clutch and pressure plate instead of the dampner, you will greatly shorten the lift of the auto tranny. There is a reason Porsche put a rubber disc in there!!!

Wanted to follow up. I ended up installing a manual flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. There is a good chance that this car is about to be purchased and the new owner wants a manual transmission. So I installed the throwout bearing and clutch fork too. It should make the swap a lot simpler in the future. I have a write up and pics coming soon.
