transmission rebuilders

Does anyone have anny recomendations for porsche tranmission rebuilders? If you do please give me a name and a general location (city, state). I am dealing with a 944 turbo manual transmission. I kindof prefer small shops for this.

Thanks guys

PS. If you are one who is going to tell me it is stupid to rebuild, don't waste you time.

Garage
California Motorsports in Lake Havasu City, AZ: California Motorsports Porsche 944 transmission section
Ask for Roger Brown, and tell him Dan Beckett referred you. They supply the hard-to-find replacement parts for the G31 gearbox available on my site (among other things).

Another alternative is GBox in Boulder CO: PORSCHE RACING AND STREET GEARBOXES-GBOX Transmission
Although I have no personal experience with them.

Well, rebuild your old one
and in the mean time, get a "spare" from 944 Ecology Porsche Parts or

eBay:

is something wrong with yours or are you just wanting it freshened up? I have done several of these in the past 9 years for my own cars and some road race guys in oxford. They are time consuming to do and get right.

There was nothing really wrong with it before I took it apart. I was putting a cooler side plate back onto my transmission to reinstall a cooler and while in there I checked into the bearings. The tapered bearings for the pinion shaft as well as the differential carrier were showing signs of slight pitting and surface distress so I decided I would replace all of the bearings. I am not replacing synchronizers or anything like that. I understand the time and complexity of the task.

Do you have a shop that rebuilds these or what is your situation? What part of indiana are you in? Do you have the tool for setting the pinion correctly? If you have the tool are you willing to loan it out? Where do you get your bearings for these rebuilds, some of them are no longer available from pelican?

the bearings can be a pain to get I had to call FAG on one bearing and they wouldn't sell me one. World Pac in fairfield oh usually can get some of the stuff. The bearings aren't too bad to do, when you start replacing gears etc is when it gets tricky. I work at our family auto repair business since leaving my engineering job at visteon. I live in Connersville IN. I have come up with a few tools I've fabbed to help do these trans, I haven't done one for about 2 years though. If you have a good understanding of bearing preload and how to adjust it accordingly as well as it's effects on backlash then they're not too bad to do.

Porsche Transaxles Repaired Engine Rebuild Tampa Florida Mechanic
These guys are in Tampa. Under their "About" tab it talks about their experience racing 944's. I have no experience with them other than stumbling across their website a couple months ago. Anyone familiar with their work?

Anyone know what it costs to have a tranny rebilt???

If my 951 needed tranny work, the first place I'd call would be Auto Edge in Mahtomedi, Minnesota (suburb of St. Paul). Do a Google search for their web site.

Which part numbers are the ones you are having trouble getting? I've got a handful of random 944 bearings just taking up space in my shop.

As for recommendations for a builder, I would send it to Bobby Hart at CMS.

Jeff Jones at Automotive Techniques in Novi MI. did a great job rebuilding the tranny in my 968 (infamous pinion bearing failure). His price was right in line with the estimate I got from CMS, and once the shipping cost was factored in, it was a no-brainer. You're close enough that you may be able to drive it up and back (about 3 hours each way).

For shipping, here's my typical over-engineered custom approach, plus some other suggestions. If they cut it open just right, it would be good for the return shipping.

How to ship a 944 transaxle for about $100!
