Was thinking of trying the NGK spark plugs in my '87 944 non turbo..164k

any opinions...likes dislikes...my mechanic puts them in all the 911's he works on..

So I was looking at the emissions sticker in the engine compartment and it says the spark plug I should be using is the BOSCH WR8DS...silver plug...I've alwys used the WR7 DC..copper.....I have an '87 944 non turbo...

So if you pull up the plugs on say for example..Pelican...it shows the WR8DS to be the plug for 83-85 944's

I was reading this info from BOSCH...

Product Description
Bosch Silver Spark Plugs are specifically engineered to improve your performance, whether sport-driving and racing conditions or power sport application. These fine wire performance plugs are specifically engineered for colder racing applications, particularly those that run at full throttle (racing, water ski, and towing) and not for traditional automotive use (stop and go traffic) as they would quickly foul out. At the heart of these plugs is the silver enhanced center electrode that conducts electricity better than copper or nickel. These plugs are specifically engineered for high performance, not long life. As silver has a lower melting point than nickel, these plugs will need to be replaced more often depending on your application. For many racing applications this is not an issue as many racers are already replacing plugs after each race or even every run.

I change my plugs about every 5000 miles, so long life isn't an issue..

Whats the deal......

Pelican also sells the WR7.... Which is what I put in my car....

And why on earth would you change plugs that often on the street? Do you notice any performance difference? Is it enough to justify 30bucks at every 5k?

it's like $10..and when BOSCH is having a rebate it's like $7 and apparently you don't change your own plugs or have seen what they look like after a few thousand miles..these are 10k plugs at most..

The WR7 lasts just fine... I have the last set that I pulled out of my car... They had about 20k on them... I only replaced them b/c the PO had not done the wires the last time and I wanted all new. The plugs last just fine. Its just pointless to change them that often in a street car.

If you are fouling them out you may be running WAY too rich... When was the last time you did the O2 sensor?

I have always run with Bosch WR7DC+ (999-170-156-90-M14) in my 1987 944n/a and no problems.

Hope this helps.

Changing the plugs every time you change your oil is nothing more than a maintenance aspect of keeping the car in top tune shape.
I do this with all my cars and although some may think it's an excessive overkill, I call it playing it safe.
Besides, plugs are relatively cheap so why not.

NGK Iridium IX here. They last a long time and seem to work fine. I ran Bosch Platinum 2's before that and they were fine, nothing special from using them. These motors just seem to like a standard tipped plug best. I've never tried the good old Bosch Supers, but may just for the heck of it and they're cheap, as mine are getting a little worn after ~40K. Only downside I've seen with the plain copper plugs is they don't last as long from an electrode wear standpoint, but hey, it's $8 to replace them.

ngk iridium here too - i've tested plenty, and they do a better job of performance

copper is cheap, but does not last as long or give as much performance

platinum last long but costs you some performance

iridium gives the best performance, but doesn't last as long as platinum

the differences are relatively small, but if you are looking at small differences, they are there

check out sparksplugs.com for a bunch of info on plugs

Awesome site flash968! The NGK iridiums are a good price compromise versus the Denso 0.4mm iridiums. I am impressed with the pricing on that site, though...and those pulstar plugs have gotten alot cheaper since I last saw them. They used to be $25 apiece and I wasn't too excited to dump $100 for a set of plugs to find out if they're bogus or not. Now they have a new 0.5mm iridium electrode version for a very reasonable price. I may just pick some up in the near future.

Anyone ever tried the pulstars before? The theory looks plausible (capacitors and inductors can do some cool stuff!). At the current selling price, they would be worth a shot.
