Red face headgasket or what?

My 84 244 suffered a major hemorrhage. It started to blow tones white smoke and wet slime out the exhaust and has coolant in the oil. No oil in the coolant. When I drained the oil it was about 9 qts of mixed oil water, almost no coolant remained in the radiator. Figured it was the head gasket so I started the break down. Found some oil in the vacuum lines and intake? The head gasket showed no obvious leaking point. Am I missing something?

I should note, the #2 piston combustion chamber was a bit cleaner than the others, not dramatically but it was noticeable.

hey when i re-did my head i found that there was oil/coolant in the vacumm line because it got into the air box. wierd? well it was. when i put a new head gasket in, it cleared right up. no more white sweet smelling smoke and no more mixed oil and coolant. i followed directions for the whole rebuild of the head from Clark's Garage Home Page. very useful. good luck

It could also be caused by the oil cooler.

coolant in oil = oil cooler seal
oil in coolant = head gasket.

If you have coolant in your oil Porsche recommends you replace your rod bearings too.

Good luck

Ok, Easy fix? not so sure. I got the oil cooler off, got all the parts but I am unable to get the oil pressure relief cap off! It's the 8mm hex bolt type and I have done everything I know short of heating it till it glows when trying to remove it. The hex bolt has started to crack and strip since I tried an impact wrench. I checked with Porsche and you can't just buy the cap otherwise I'd just cut it out with a dremel! Any ideas? Anyone done a replacement to a new style OPRV and got a spare cap for an early type OPRV? They want $450 or so for a replacement new style!

What about the coolant in the exhaust? Don't see how the oil cooler could cause that.

What about the steam-cleaned #2 CC? Don't see how the oil cooler could cause that.

I'm thinking the coolant dump in the crankcase overflowed the vacuum system resulting in the oil/coolant in the intake and subsequently getting sucked into the combustion chambers and out the exhaust. and #2 wasn't steam cleaned that much, just was cleaner than the others, not as much carbon flakes (maybe a small head gasket leak there?). The oil cooler o rings were definitely bad, the cooler was loose on removal.

I suppose it is possible. But since you already have the head off, you'll have both bases covered anyways.

^+1 Do them both at the same time. Having the head off makes it much easier to do the OPRV seals.

Unhappy

Yeah, I'm all geared up for doing both. Got all the parts but I'm stymied by the inability to remove the OPRV cover. How much heat can I apply to it trying to remove it? The 8mm hex head is breaking out and if I could fine a new one, i'd just cut it out and replace it. Otherwise i have to try and install it blind and compress the spring and get the bolts in somehow.... any ideas?

Hmm. Maybe remove the whole assembly in one piece, take out the guts and then take what's left to a shop and have them remove the OPRV retaining bolt?

Finally! Success

So after about 2 weeks I have succeeded in removing the OPRV cover without destroying the case! I dremmeled the sides of that @#$@#$ Allen head off into a hex shape and drove a 6pt 15 mm socket down over it. With a 1/2 inch ratchet and a breaker bar was able to remove the bastage! it seems the person who worked on it before me put it on with 3 lbs of Teflon tape, red locktite and a 200lb impact wrench! Guess I owe my step son a socket as it ain't ever coming off! Woot. Now I can begin my rebuild!

Smile

Just a note to say thanks for everyone's help! My car lives again! Just started it up and boy did it run bad and smoke till all the remaining crap got sucked out of the vacuum lines and the oil burned off the headers! there is still some crap in the exhaust that needs to burn off but otherwise she's back in business. Tomorrow she gets some fresh fuel and another oil change!

You need to replace your bearings if there was coolant in the crankcase.
