Just a note for you all after my recent break-in.....
The little gits got in between the door panel and the handle, and so to stop this, I asked the guy that did the repairs to fit some armour-plate door handle surrounds from a MKII Golf (Rabbit???). They are still black at the moment, but for the extra peace of mind, they don't look at all bad!! (You have to slightly 'modify' the golf plates to fit our linkage) There's some for sale specifically for the 944 at Prestige parts website (No, I'm not affiliated!), and a semi-decent piccy..... According to the dealer here who first took a look at it, this is the No.1 well known entry method for the 924/944 series. Worth the £40...... I know so! I haven't looked that hard, but someone must sell these bits in the US aswell (there are enough Golf's around!) -------------------- Mike '89 951. Rebuild done... tune-up necessary! My car got broken into in the same way. That break-in technique works for all VW's and Porsches, and any other car with the same door handle (also some Audi's i think).
I was going to get some of those, they'll cover the damage in addition to deterring further break-ins. I haven't bought them yet, the damage on my car is so minor after i straightened it out, that you can barely see it. What did they take? stereo equipment? Try this trick. Make the stereo look like something that NO ONE would want to steal. Take an old stereo, cut off the face with a hacksaw or bandsaw, and glue all the knobs and buttons back on in all their proper places. Figure out some method of attaching it, and put it on as a dummy face anytime you remove the real face from your radio. Look at these pictures. Now, who would steal that????? A picture of the back, showing the "clips" that i made out of some of the leftover plastic from the crap radio. It pops right into where the real face came out of. Mike |

A good method of holding a fake face plate on those of you who have in-dash cd players, is to cut an old cd in half and attach it to the back of the fake radio plate. It holds the fake in the right place and is easy to put on and remove.

My problem was not that the little ba&!#%d wanted the stereo (although I do admit it is usually high on the list of priorities), but that they wanted the car!
The damage that they did trying to start the thing almost made the insurance company write the car off! I actually had the boot full of tools and old parts after my upgrade. Nothing was touched! Yes, I'm lucky, but better safe than sorry, and for the sake of $60, if I had a bit of hinsight, I'd have done it before! Mike |
