Any advice

Would be a great help.

As few know, my 89 944 caught fire from a fuel line bursting on labor day weekend. I've been scouring part numbers and diagrams looking to see what all needs to be replaced. The list doesn't look too long fortunately.

Yet I do have a couple questions and they seem stupid to me but everyone here on the forum are so helpful and I have to ask as this is my first Porsche I've owned and the first car I've ever had catch fire.

First question is, knowing that wires are burnt under hood, can I splice new wire from where these aren't burnt?

Second, how do I know if I have ABS or not? My car didn't have a manual when I got it and I'm curious.

Thanks in advance.

There should be, in the trunk behind the spare, a "build sticker". It will have codes for paint, interior and options.

Its my recollection that ABS is very rare on BASE 944's. Same with airbags. There should also be visable an "abs computer"/ module under the hood (at least I assume there would be if the car is so equipped).

Look by your strut tower for this yellow connector. If it looks like the one in the picture you do not have ABS. If it is a round, barrel style connector with 1 wire going through both ends, no ABS. If its the barrel style connector with 2 wires going in and 1 wire going out, you have ABS. You can check the option code sticker also, number 593 is ABS.

And yes you can splice new wire and repair the damaged sections. Depending how badly the harness was burnt up, you may be better off finding a donor harness to replace the burnt up sections or replacing the entire harness.

Buy a used wiring harness if for no other reason to keep the German colored wire for future tracking if you have problems and have to use a wiring diagram to trace.

Cheers,
Larry
