I need thoughts on 924S suspension upgrades.

I am considering suspension upgrades and wanted some input.

I have an 87 924S riding on 225/45/15 tires, which fit easily with the late offset turbo wheels and a 1/4" spacer on the front. The suspension is currently as follows: Bilstein Sports (non adjustable), 250 lb Weltmeisters coils, 26.8mm front sway and 18mm rear, torsion bars are stock. In our region I pay points for the springs and sways so I am thinking since I already take them, why not maximize them? Currently my handling is very neutral with no surprises, but there still is a bit of roll when cornering. I have not yet indexed the rear down which I plan to do.

In talking to the 944's folks two classes above me it seems they are all running 350lb -400lb coils and 28-30mm torsions. Some have adjustable sways and others don't. What I am considering is changing to 350 coils and a 28mm torsion set and keeping everything else as is.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.
M

while upgrading springs is all well and fine, look into a strut brace if you dont already have one, there are plenty of them around and they really help in turns. eliminates any twisting of the front frame

Bracing the front inner sway bar mounts is cheap and has a positive efffect

Thanks for the input gents, I really apreciate it!

petrolhead611: I had thought about adding the swaybar mount braces and will most likely do so.

masterchafe14: Unfortunatly I am working within a given points system and the strut brace costs the same points as and LSD (which I can't afford ) or adjustable camber plates, which is probably the direction I will go...eventually.

Anybody running the spring & torsion setup I mentioned, if you are please feel free to jump on in.

Does the car see street duty? Is this for "racing" or "autocross"?

Depending on those answers, as well as how young you are to handle a potentially more uncomfortable ride, go for it!

I know the 400lb springs are popular near me.. for the 944Spec race cars and those who trailer their cars.. not too many actually drive them on the street once they get set up that stiff.

Based on what you said in post #1, I would first upgrade the T-bars before you do anything else.

Sorry about the locations being missing, I think its fixed. (I am in So Cal.)

The only street use it sees is going to PCA events. My regular form of transportation is a Triumph Sprint Motorcycle, so a stiff ride isn't a bother I ran 6 AX's this season. The AX events we run in San Diego are fairly long, about 1.25mi. so almost like a short road course. I hope to run 3-4 time trials a year. In Sept we went to Buttonwillow and did well with a 2.24.84 in street stock classs. (A new record for our club on that track setting )

Based on the feedback I am getting I think I am on the right path with this.

I have located a good price on a T bar and hope to pick that up first, then save a bit for springs. (things are tight) After that it will be between camber plates and tower strut brace and (if there is such a thing a rear one) either will fit within my classes points.

I am running 300/27 on my 931. Ride is quite stiff but body roll is very low. Car tracks great.

Cheap torsion bars are available at cip1.com.

Those are some low prices! Since those are VW, any idea what length the 924S/944 takes?

**NOTE: No need to post the size, I found the other thread where you provided it. 26 9/16 length.**

Damn those are cheap t-bars! Will any of them fit a 944 though?

mmagus: Sounds like you're doin' a good job enjoying that car the way it should be. You should upgrade the t-bars and see how it handles then go from there. That front sway bar sounds like it might be a little big for an 18mm in the rear. I'm using the same sizes and I get a little more understeer than I'd like in some situations.

If you do the t-bars yourself let me know how it goes cause I want to eventually attempt to change and re index mine too.

Hi Mark,

I have 400lb springs and 30 mm bars on my car and I still drive it on the street, it is stiff however. The 911 is my DD, so I have a good plan B. A four hour drive to Buttonwillow or Willow is doable, but not the most comfortable. I imagine Morgan did this prior to your purchase, but a good alignment and corner balance will give you the most bang for your buck and costs no points to boot. I'm going to miss the next SD AX, but if you'd like to try a SPEC suspension next year, come by and take a couple of laps to see how it rides.

Thanks John. I will not be at an AX till Jan. I have an offor made on a set of 30mm's but if that falls through I will give the 28mm VW HD ones a try. Hopefully by then I will have the set up switched. BUT I would never turn down a couple of laps in your SPEC! After the spring and T Bar swap, rear indexing, there will be an alignment and corner balancing to me sure!
