shut off while driving
Yesterday about a block away from my work, while driving, my 944 just turned off. I am here in Socal, san diego, and it has been raining the past few days. It wasn't raining at the time but the ground was very wet. Once I came to a stop I tried to start the car and it started right up. It has never done this before and hasn't since. I am guessing that water might have shorted something out and turned off the car. I don't know. I have drove in the rain many time before with no problems. What should I look at on the car?

Check your ground straps, and battery earth cable are all sound and fixed securely.
When the car died was it electrically dead for a few seconds, like no ignition system, or did it just cut out and coast to a halt like fuel starvation? If the latter, try wiggling the DME relay. cheers Russell

It felt more like a fuel starvation than anything. All the gauge lights were still on while I was coasting. What does wiggling the DME relay do? Is the relay bad, or just losing connection?

Did the tach needle do anything strange when it was stalling out? Any jumping up or down?

Wiggling it "might" get the contacts inside the relay to make. Also, wiggling it might help the prongs on the relay to make better contact with the base. The wiggle trick did not work for me but a new relay solved it. I was surprised by the amount of corrosion on the relay prongs and inside the relay (I got curious and pried it apart). It's very dry here so in a wet area like yours the corrosion could be much worse. Very common for this relay to go bad so carry a spare in the car.

The tach didn't do anything crazy.
I think I am going to get a relay just in case. Thanks

Good idea. I think that will solve your problem.

This is the first and only time this has happened. If it was to happen again, and the car doesn't start, is there a way to take apart the DME relay and clean it and make it work again? In case I am stuck somewhere and I don't have another relay yet.

My 944 did that while I was on the highway. It was like you turned the key off for one moment. The next time I had the car on the highway it shut down, it was the DME relay.

My car's previous owner had the same thing happen. Swapped out the DME relay and it hasn't happened since.

When I purchased my -84/944 more than a year ago I pulled all relays and fuses and rubbed the prongs on each relay with fine emery cloth and greased them with thin layer ofvaseline ....
not so popular habit here in this forum...he, he. Same treatment to the fuses and I have had no electrical problem since, luckily enogh. I also pulled the plastic can off the DME-relay to inspect contacts, soldering and diode and rubbed those silver contacts with emery cloth as well. Cleaned relay contacts with pure alcohol and had a good ohmic reading after that. Lastly I excerscised the DME-relay ten to twenty times with 12 Volt from battery just to see it worked well.......and it did. Put can back and put the complete relay back into relay plate. I think I must be very lucky with electrical functions in my car compared to many of you guys with all your problems I read about here. And.......my car has 230.000 km on it. Naturally, I keep a spare DME-relay in the glove box. I have been warned many times here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lapponia |

Use dielectric grease. It's manufactured for lubrication for electric connections. it usually comes in a tube like tiny toothpaste. You only need a tiny dab on each connection

My vaseline is finished and one isnīt too old to learn something new. After all we are living in a modern world. Would be happy to know about the dielectric grease and what brand to see if I can get it over here in the old world.
Even if one uses dielectric grease I wold reccomend applying it with a small flat brush over the whole contact area... and both sides if it is a flag, spade, prong or whatever. One never knows exactly where contact is made between male and female parts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lapponia |

Yeah, everything else works great. I have another DME relay just in case now.
Why, did yours stop working, all three things?

Not sure if I am having the same issues, but my 83 944 just turns over , everything works but she won't fire up. 2 days ago she fired up ok? Could it be the DME relay and if so which one is it ? I suspect its under the dash on the left side.
