Okay, so I've started my tune up. I am replacing all the gaskets, including head gasket, seals, vaccuum lines, idle control valve, water pump, and ALL fluids.
I removed the intake box and stock MAF sensor. I saw that some of the metal coolant lines are corroded. Do they look salvageable and need to be cleaned or do you think I should replace them? Secondly, these vaccuum lines are going to need replacing one day. Shall I change them now? Can I replace them with silicone hoses or do I have to use the factory one? They have the metal attachment on one end. I also need to replace the wastegate control/dealie (the banjo bolt mod) hose. I'm assuming I have to use the stock hose for that. Lastly...behind there was this oil/dirt/crap/etc built up right by cylinder 1, near the intake manifold. It is from one of the seals, no?

I am doing almost the same thing that you are, but I am not doing the head gasket. I also have the same corrosion on those metal pipes. Having just done this I used some carb cleaner and a scotch bright pad and it came right off! This helped a bunch when I put the new hoses on.

Try cleaning up the metallic piece. Mine looked like that but I was able to use a wire brush on it. That was 3 years ago, and it is a track car.
The other corrosion looks like it might be from leaking coolant. I'd just brush it off and check all the coolant hose clamps and hoses for that matter. I replaced all my hoses. Don't forget the ones behind the block for the heater. The banjo bolt hose is easy to replace. It hardens and cracks in time. You need one that will stand 15 psi and heat. The factory stuff is not expensive and is sold by the foot. The big vacuum line looks good to me from your picture. I also found corrosion on the triple steel tubing under the manifold. I wire brushed that mess off also. |
