Accessory Drive Belt Squeel

I have an 83 NA that I cannot seem to keep the accessory drive belt tensioned. The upper bolt in the AC compressor keeps backing out. I have tried locknuts and threadlock. There is no power steering. A great car but annoying as hell when that belt starts its noise.

Thanks, Mike

Are you talking about 1 of the 2 bots that hold the A/C compressor to the Bracket that goes on the engine block, or the anodized bracket that has a larger bolt on one side and a smaller on the other that connects to one of the 2 tabs on the bottom of the compressor?

If it''s the top 2 bolts that hold the a/c compressor the the bracket that goes on the block make sure the one on the back of the comrpessor is there. mine was missng. but it didn't really make my belt squeal. the bottom adjustment bracket is what got rid of the squeal for me

Thanks Jaime,

I'll bet the back top bolt is missing. That never ocurred to me. I think I will take the bottom engine cover off and leave it off for a while. What a pain any time you need to get under there and do any maint. It is the top front bolt that keeps backing out.

Mike

The bolts backed out of mine several times (front and rear), even using thread sealer. I finally used longer bolts and put retaining nuts on there. So far so good. btw - keep a check on them, as each time I lost the rear bolt - the tension rod broke.

I wonder how prevelant this problem is. I looked in my Haynes Manual and could not find any specifics on this. Also, nothing on Clarks Garage. The dealer here does so little maintenence on the 944 although they do have parts. Ask one of the techs about 944 related service questions and they don't know.
