Did I buy the wrong flasher relay?

I thought I purchased the correct replacement part but now it doesn't look like it.

1984 944

Car was purchased without a flasher relay installed so I have no original to refer to. I purchased a 191 953 227 A since that is the part number.

The part arrived

However, it's a three pin relay and my relay box has female for four pins. The relay physically will fit so maybe that extra pin was just for placement? Seems weird to me though because the numbers for the pins on the relay holder do not match those on the relay itself.

For your 944___ Pelican New parts Catalog is giving number(1H0-953-227-M5206) for a flasher -turn signal relay & it's a three pins, are you sure you're trying to fit that relay in the rigth place, number (X1) is the location where it goes on an early 944.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1288497987.jpg

Yes, that's the spot X1. I did order the correct relay according to the manual. But apparantly the manual isn't correct.

I ran across another thread where someone ran into the same thing. I now ordered 914-618-303-11-M504. Appears to be the four pin that I need.

Did you try the 3-pinner? It MIGHT work, and would not cause any damage if it did not. It simply would not activate.

Oh, and that's XI (roman for 11), not X1.

jhilb 10-31-2010 05:53 AM

I didn't try it. I was wondering if it would cause damage or not.

Best I can tell the extra PIN is just to activate the "pilot light" which I assume is the dash light.

Think it's safe?

Bosch relays (and most automotive relays, in general, follow the bosch pinout scheme) are all based on the same pinout, with the 3-pin being the most basic.

I just went out and checked my 951, and the signal relay IS 3-pin, but the socket DOES have 4 slots. The signals, flashers, and indicator light all work fine.

Great, thanks a bunch!! Really, thank you.

I will go try it. Argh. I might have ordered another part I don't need.

jhilb 10-31-2010 04:21 PM

Worked perfectly. Thanks again!

No problem.

I have a 83 NA that the turn signals and flasher work but cannot switch on high beams. Could this be the relay for me? Have to wait til spring to try it though my 944 is in the Carjacket.

Most likely the stalk switch.

Edit: Unless you were the victim of the un-likey event of both HB filaments burning out at the same time

M. Murphy 11-05-2010 04:46 PM

Thanks Wild Man. No, both high beams function. When the stalk is pulled back there is no click to the high beams just the momentary on of the high beams.

HondaDustR 11-05-2010 08:09 PM

Do the regular headlights work? It may be your headlight switch, fuses, or some wiring problem with the main switch in addition to the stalk switch. There are no headlight relays (unfortunately). The stalk switch will divert voltage directly to the high beams when pulled for flashing, but rediverts the voltage passage back to through the main switch when you click it to high beam mode. It could be the stalk switch, but the main switch could also be a problem. I know because when my headlight switch eventually melted down (why aren't there relays again?), the only lights I had were the high beams only if I held the stalk in.

If there's no click to activate high beams, the stalk switch itself is most likely broken.

M. Murphy 11-06-2010 12:51 PM

I think you are probably right about the stalk switch. The previous owner had apparently gotten frustrated with it because the stalk switch notch was pulled right out of the little divet.

Other than that the lights work normal (somewhat dim). You are right, why no relays. I normally have a lot of respect for Porsche engineers but this car in some respects seems to have been built by fired GM bean counters.

Yeah, I went from a 1.9v drop to a 0.15v drop between the battery and the headlights when I made a relay harness for them. The lights are alot brighter and actually useful when it's dark. Good upgrade to make.
