Auto parts store CV Axles?
I was just curious if anyone has used Axles from ********, Autozone, Adavance Auto Parts, or even Napa.
I know that ******** and autozone use A1 Cardone to reman axles. I don't know if advanced auto parts carries axles, if they do let me know. I have noticed A1 Cardone axles have a lifetime warranty on them. Which is nice, but if I am going to be replacing them all the time I would maybe like to pay a bit more and get high quality axles. Napa Reman Axles have just a 3 year warranty on them. I don't know who does it though? I don't think that its A1 Cardone. Let me know what your results were and what not. Thanks for the info. |

I used auto parts store axles on my 951 this past year (I replaced both over the winter in antipation of a track season). I broke both of them on the track (at separate times), leaving me stranded. My car was dyno'ed at 217hp at the crank, so it wasn't like i was putting down lots of hp.
I replaced them with Porsche parts. Lesson learned. |

a reman axle is just that . they regrind and or cut the races that the barings run on and don't reharden them . that is fine for a run of the mill daily driver to get my ass to work car . but if your thinking of track driving the car or aggressive street driving get new cv's or axles .

I put a set of cardones (from AZ) on my 951S last year, and have not had any problems so far. But I did take the extra step of pumping lots of extra bearing grease into the boots, on top of the bags of the lighter weight CV grease that came with them.
They might not be the strongest axles that you can get, but I like it that way. They act as my "fuses" that protect my transmission, hopefully letting go before it does.

I have heard mixed reviews on Cardone axle. I was thinking of getting RAxles.com axles since they don't regrind, but they are like $199.99 an axle. So they are almost as expensive as just buying new.
Does anyone know how good NAPA axles are? |

The WORST you can get, from what I have heard, anyways.

I have a set of NAPA axles that I recently installed into my 951 - easier and about the same price as rebuilding all 4 CVs. I've only got about 400 miles on them but they've all been hard miles - I beat this car like a rented mule - and no issues so far. I did inspect them carefully before they went in and I didn't see anything scary about them.

With ANY re-manned part you run a certain risk (it's higher than most would want to think) of getting a "bad" one.
Bottom line: The re-manner that NAPA uses simply has a higher failure rate than one that AZ uses (cardone). But you still run a "decent" chance of getting 2 good ones. I haven't had mine long enough to comment on long jevity though.

So should I try these out? My car is mostly a daily driver that gets spiritedly driven once in a while. I can't drive it too hard now because my car's CV's make quite a bit of noise.

Yup, there on the verge of letting go (and leaving you sit). You might want to consider buying at least 1 right now, and carrying it with you, along with the few tools needed to change it it. Would save you towing fees and time, should one decide to let go.

has anyone gotten them from rock auto? They are about $60 cheaper, but if I have to ship them the cores back that will eat up the savings?

That would be debatable. If AZ sells them for 70, and you are getting them for 60 less than that, you would be getting a pair for 20, instead of 140, so unless it costs you 120 for what they charge you to ship (I heard they do charge a lot), and what it costs you so send back the cores, you would save.

I mean $60 cheaper overall. Autozone is 89.99 for an axle and ******** is $64 an axle.
Autozone gives you free shipping, but you have to pay tax. |
