Oil filter magnet

Lately I've receive some PM asking me about the (yellow thing ),siting under my PS reservoir on my 968 & ex 944.It's call a FILTRO tm a very very stong & well design oil fiter magnet, in fact if you lay it flat on a piece of steel ,there is no way you'll pry it off by hand. This one will catch all unwanted particles traveling in your oil & keep it on top of your filter.Since we can't use the wrap around type on our car it will fit perfectly on top of your filter.I'm no good at linking but for those who want more infos about it here it is.Google Canadian Tire Filtro tm oil filter magnet, then once on the page look for Filter Max.Prize is approx $30.00 CDN + $8.00 shiping to US.

2 schools of thought on filter magnets:

1. the magnet will catch the metal fragments and keep them from getting into your system

2. the magnet will pass a magnetic charge to the ferrous particles, which will then stick to anything ferrous

on the presumption that #1 is 100% effective, this sounds great - if not, which is more likely the case, #2 is potentially pretty ugly

since engine bearings are non-ferrous, the block and head is aluminum, and the pistons and rods are aluminum, that material would not get caught by the magnet anyway, so i don't really see much of an advantage, and i only see the potential of scenario #2 coming into play and letting particles get stuck to what is ferrous (the crankshaft)

while i have no definitive evidence of either scenario prevailing, i have seen magnetically charged particles on a crankshaft twice, and only on an engine that used a magnet each time
