Ok today driving back from Europroducts half of a mile from my house the car starts to drive hard like it's dying and when I came to the light to turn the engine cuts off and quits running it turns over but will not fire. So I pushed the car over 4 lanes into a transmission shop. I pop the hood and can't find anything wrong so I run home call a friend so we can push the **** over my house. Well it looks like the belt tension went or something. Any ideas what this can be I'm staying home from school tomorrow to work on it. Any help any ideas on what it can be please share with me.
Thanks Seb |

I hope you're not talking about timing belt tension. You could have lost an idler, jumped time & messed up some valves.

Don't know tomorrow I am going to take the belt housing off and going to take a look at the belts. Any ideas on what I should look for I know the mark on the cam sprocket and the bet to line up but anything else??

Well, don't know what kind of car we are talking about. I've never done any belts on a 928, but I asume the crankshaft TDC can be looked at though a hole in the bell housing. It should be a line, mark, "0" or something to line up with a pointer, I guess. This is on the rest of FE watercooled.

It's an 951 1986. Sorry I didn't say that earlier.

Hey!!! Don't be bending his valves already... could be a few other things, DME relay for one. Fuel pump may have died or even a coil failure. Check for spark, if your gettting spark out of 2 plugs, then your belts are OK and your coil too. If not, bad coil or rotor broke. If you smell a strong gas odor, then I would doubt you have a fuel pump failure. Relays are cheap. I'll cross my fingers for ya.

All I have to do when I put the new tension on is line up the TDC marks on the cam sprocket??? Then I put the belt on and tension it right? This is an 86 951.

If you bent the valves, you have to take off the head and change all the bad valves. I had this happen to me when I had a 83 944 and I did the job my self. Save me over $3,000! The turbo has more things to take off but do it and save and be proud you can be a porsche mechanic. I work on 944 heads, main and con-rods bearings, cluch, oil cooler, water pump, oil pump Damn only the trans I have to learn. ![]() Last edited by 88_944; 01-23-2002 at 02:08 PM.. |

Usually, Turbos don't bend the valves.

I'm going to put everything back together and see what happens. If the valves are bent then I'm screwed. Hopefully I can manage and do the belt right.

Let's hope valves are alright then.
Put your new tensioner on. No need for new belt yet unless teeth are sheared on old one. As far as lining every thing back up. Take the plugs out so the motor will turn easier. Get a socket, 22mm I think, & short extension with ratchet or pull handle. Put the socket on crank pulley bolt & turn clockwise, feeling for resistance. When you get close to lining the mark on pulley up to the pointer on timing cover back, start checking the hole in the bell housing for TDC mark. Go a little bit at a time so you won't pass it. When the TDC on flywheel is lined up with pointer, you're at TDC. Now loosen idler enough to jump teeth on cam pulley to line up cam pulley to its mark. I'm pretty sure you're going to be off some or you would crank up. With every thing in line, cross your fingers & fire her up. If she starts your valves & all are OK. Now while you've got all that stuff off, get it back to TDC & put on new belts, check balance idlers. I'll do a search of a post I made with balance shaft pulley alignment & edit to give you the date, etc. It will keep me from typing so much. drew1 edit: thread: balance shaft belts posted by: tri date: 08-15-2000 Last edited by drew1; 01-23-2002 at 04:29 PM.. |

But I don't have time to work on it school and I need to get rid of the 944 that's sitting in my yard well let me say that again I need to get rid of the 1/3 944 sitting in my yard anyone need parts lmao.
