Need help trouble shooting...

When i first got my car (87 944S), i could shift through the gears very smoothly. Now it kinda feels like its getting rougher or I was told by my friend "notchy" between the gates... somthing like that. Basically, when i pull from 1st to go to 2nd in between or neutral it feels "notchy" or like a click the fell to it. Its not noisy at all and once in a while it hesitates to go to 1st. If I shift as smooth as possible I have no problem shift from gear to gear. Just feels notchy and ONLY from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, thats all. My friend said it might need an adjustment? True? Help me out.

Well, my friend has a 924 and a 951 and he said that the clutch felt a little soft when depressing the clutch pedal, but wasn't to sure. Doesn't fell spongy or anything like that. To me it feels firm all the way to the floor and it doesn't engage until you practically let go. He said not to worry about it, "it doesn't seem to be somthing major right now. But, say on it." Anymore Ideas?

Could be tranny synchro's, 1st to 2nd almost always is the first to go, followed by 2nd to 3rd, they just get used more often. I'm not sure if what you're describing is this. Synchro's basically start the gear spinning before it is engaged. If the sychros are goin, there is no easy or cheap 944 tranny jobs, that should be left to the pro's.

It could just be the tranny oil. Do the symptoms go away after the car is at warmer operating temps?

In colder temps, the tranny oil is thicker, less viscous, and the tranny is a little harder to operate. But once the car is warmed up, the notchiness should go away. Note: 1st and 2nd are the main gears that experience this problem if the oil is too thick.
Switching to synthetic transmission oil will relieve the problem.

If the shifting is still notchy after driving around for 1/2 an hour, then it's not the tranny oil.
